Show off your roosters

I rehomed my barred rock roo this week so I instantly had to replace him;) This is the RIR roo I got. The lady told me he was over a year old but he seems tiny to me. How might I guesstimate his age?

Once chickens feather in there isn't really much of a way to tell. Does he have his spurs yet? Are they short or long?

Why is it that most roosters now have short tails. My legacy we did a quick measurement today and his tail is almost 3 feet long. He has no game bird in him, and no long tail breeds in him he is just an old fashioned breed from way back in the 1920's that originated from Maine. I can't believe the differences in the old breeds and the breeds they have these days. It use to be that people prized their roosters for their tails I guess not so much any more??? In fact I was shocked at my Delawares little tail, over a year old and its puny. Tomorrow I will add his picture in here as well as my little Mexican rooster, both have long tails. maybe I can get my son to hold Stormy while I hold the little man next to him. Huge difference in size but both carry that tail that we all loved when we were younger.

If manliness use to be judged by the tail of a rooster then the newer breeds are only half the man that the old breeds use to be.

No not really any spurs yet just little nubs where they are starting
probably around a year give or take a few months.

Each breed just has there own characteristics. I guess one day along the road someone decided they wanted to make a breed that had shorter tails. There is always going to be diversity. Long tailed breeds just aren't for some people, I imagine it would be a challenge to keep their tails in good shape. But there has always been some short tailed breeds around.

You know what is funny??? I was just remembering back when I was a kid about 30+ years ago and my dad betting on the chicks and which rooster would have the longest tail. For some reason my uncle always told my dad that he would cheat because my dads always had the longer tails.

He looks to me to be approximately 10 months old. His spurs are still fairly small.
