show quality birds?

I'm a little new to this forum thing but I thought I would just chirp in. Let me know if this is considered unacceptable behavior.

To the lady who is considering breeding "Four or Five different breeds", I would recommend starting with two different breeds. Many two trios of each. Thats a dozen birds requiring four separate pens. Until you get a feel for what is involved in breeding poultry to standards.

I wish someone would have told me that about eight years ago. :)
 
There are so many great breeds out there to start with. Orpingtons are wonderful layers all year and great mothers, so are Giant Cochins. My Marans lay well in the warmer months but they don't usually make very good mothers. I've been incubating for years now and it can be quite heart wrenching in the begining.
