Show quality or not?

Hey thanks for the info, I'm not thinking about show or anything just wanted to understand the smudging if the bars and that link says it all! We started out wanting only about 6 or 7 chicks and are sitting at close to 20 now...2 nhr's, 2 barred plym., 2 red stars, 2 black stars, 2 blrw's, 2 buff brahmas, 1 ee, 1 mix of ee & blrw and 4 HNC's (have no clue) lol
Thanks again and sorry chickenbooboo for hopping on your thread...thats a nice bird you got and how are the eggs turning out?

Never, EVER cut feathers before a show. It's an automatic DQ of your bird because it says to the judge that you're trying to hide something. Hence, the feather pulling by some breeders. It's a "legal" way of getting DQs out of a bird. Having a bird that is missing a feather will not bring up the huge red flag that a cut off feather will. I don't like seeing it done, but some people have and will do it. Especially if a single black feather is in the way of a champion and a DQ.

Chris09, the barring on the show birds is a lot smaller then mine and Dirty_South_Chickens. Looks more like a zebra then mine for sure.

rodriguezpoultry, do the judges look all over the bird for broken feathers? Is a plucked feather less obvious then a cut one?

Yes, plucked feathers are much less obvious. For example:

If you have a hen with a completely black feather in her primaries, she's gonna get DQed. So, you decide to cut the feather. Automatic DQ when the judge sees it because it seems like an attempt to hide her faults. Now, if you'd plucked it, you would lose points, but the judge would probably chalk it up to the transport of the bird, season, etc.

I don't like to see people pull feathers because it's just a trick and will show up later in the breeding pool.

Yeah, I guess you are right. Approx how much would a good show quality bird cost as an adult? Is there a difference between roos and hens?

Usually both sexes cost the same in the same breed, it completely depends on the breed also. You may want our help picking out some SQ birds since I assume you don't really know how to pick one out, if you find some for sale post the pics on here and we can help.
