*Show Quality Sebastopol Geese*

Hi its the husband..Jerry using my wifes user name..

I think...from my short term memory that the standard calls for round body on the females..right? and the males can have a longer body...hope I am not wrong on this.

Anyway the theory goes that the longer bodied Sebs seem to have better feathering and the wider deeper chests. I like the wide, wider, more depth to them Sebs, big heads and nice thick med. length necks....I dont like any curve to the necks..and please no slender necks...

Jerry

The standard does not differentiate between males and females in type other than size.
We have the APA Sebastopol Geese standard posted on the Sebastopol forum if you want to look it over.
http://www.sebastopols.freeforums.org/

The problems I've seen with some of the more long or rectangular shaped Sebs is they are narrow.
So longer doesn't always mean wider.

Did you know the standard also allows for a slight curve to the neck?

"BODY: Round , deep, profusely covered with long
and much curled feathers.
Paunch - no clearly discernible lobes are evident."

Here is a quote from the standard. I have two questions. What is meant by
"deep"? And, what do they mean by "Paunch - no clearly discernible lobes are evident." I've never seen a goose without lobes. Aren't they necessary (or at least beneficial) on the female to incubate eggs and keep the hatch warm? Also, who could see them under those feathers anyway? Do they mean the lobes should be totally covered with long feathers so you just can't see them?

Anyone got a clue?

Fresh bathing water daily will keep them clean.

That's one of the many great things about showing waterfowl-they're self cleaning. As long as you provide them with clean water that is.

When I got my smooth breasted Seb saddleback gander I noticed (due to his smooth paunch) that he had duel lobes so I asked his breeder about that and she said they're suppose to have duel lobes. When I told her what the APA standard calls for she said D. Holderread stated on the Seb description on the American Livestock Breed Conservancy website that they're suppose to have duel lobes.
Here's what DH said in part:
Sebs have "keelless breasts and dual lobes (fatty lobes that hang below the abdomen)."
So I'm thinking hmmm....regardless of what DH says that's not what the APA standard calls for.
So this breeder friend of mine emailed an APA judge and long story short he told her it was OK, either way.
Well call me picky but I thought the SOP standard is what we should follow. Since there's no Seb breed club we'll probably never know and unfortunately its often pointless to ask long time Seb breeders because they either don't communicate with us peasants or if they do you get conflicting information so I guess its just another one of those Sebastopol mysteries.

P.S. Sooooo anyhoo... in your opinion why does the standard need revising
when nobody seems to pay attention to it anyway?
