Showing chickens at the fair, help needed so they stand on a table.

Since Narragansett wants to relate this thread to what ever it is he does for a living I'll do the same. People who have an exaggerated sense of their own importance, lack empathy, are arrogant & believe themselves to have knowledge or insights others lack often can be diagnosed with a Narcissistic Personality Disorder. Well that may very well be, but in my observations, experience and IMO, 4h programs often leave a lot to be desired. I'll leave it at that.

There are bad bits and pieces to every organization. It doesn't mean the entire thing is worthless or that you should generalize about the product as a whole. To do so insults many hard working children, leaders, and their families...many of the people in this thread including the original poster.

I found out today that the pin of broilers behind my chickens sold for $35 a pound! Next year I think I will order a few and not get so attached to them and sell them. Someone also told me that rabbits do very well also because people don't really sell there rabbits to eat.

Those cornish crosses don't have the same personalities of other breeds. They are harder to get attached to. Plus, when you go into in with the mentality that you they aren't pets, they are food, it is easier. Order more than you plan to show because they can succumb to a number of things. You need to have enough for that minimum number of birds that are the right size for your pen. Depending upon your fair rules, you might have to slaughter them yourself. Where I am, the kids have to slaughter (or pay a processor to slaughter for them) chickens, ducks, and turkeys, and rabbits sold as market animals. Larger livestock such as cows, goats, sheep and pigs are not the responsibility of the seller to process. I think my girls are going to try market chickens next year.

No, we have people who come in to slaughter the animal for the person who buys it.

Today was the last day of the fair! I got one mor blue first place ribbon for my record book. And the the test I took, I did amazing! I got 2 bags of chicken feed and $20! I didn't win the round robin, I missed that by one point, it was just a belt buckle anyways, I don't even use a belt. I can't watt to bring my chickens home tomorrow, my poor rooster is stressed, he lost about a pound or two...

Congratulations! That is awesome. Now that you have one show under your belt, and you know what to expect, it will be so much easier. My girls decided that this next year, they want to raise their own showmanship birds from an egg, so we are getting hatching eggs pretty soon. NYREDS had suggested Modern Game Bantams, and I found a few breeders in my area with his help. This will be our first experience with an incubator (well I've hatched reptiles for college classes, but never chickens) so this will be new for us. They are really excited. I think we are going to hatch a few different breeds and then go from there.

Good luck at coop out!

Modern Game Bantams or Seramas would be an excellent choice for a showmanship bird. I have both, and love them!

My girls are young too (8 and 10) so the smaller size will work a lot better for them. My youngest did very well with a Sizzle (silkie x cochin) but she had a hard time handling her. She's lightweight, lighter than my much smaller silkie, but still on the large size for my small daughter. They are super excited!

Wow, sounds like you did really really well at the fair this year, big congrats! *highfive* A few treats and some quality hen time relaxing at home should bring your roo right back to his happy self. I remember showing chickens in FFA and absolutely loved it, I'm very happy for your success!
