I know cuckoo is not a recognized variety of silkie. can they still be shown ? will they ever be recognized ? I'm trying to decide if I want to concentrate on them currently I have my cuckoos in with some splashes and blacks I know breeding to black is good, what about splashes ?

I think they are like my Mille Fleur Cochins in that they can be shown as Other Variety. They cannot win BOB or BIS, but they can win Best of Variety. I have been told that showing them is the only way to get them recognized.

in a sanctioned show they would go aov silkie like showgirls do i would think. in a non sanctioned show depending on the show when i raised them they went as aov feather leg or cuckoo silkie a class made for them for local shows here. as long as they have aov classes any color can be shown just needs to be entered different since not standard color. i love cuckoos wish more breeders were working on them.

Your Cuckoo Silkies will only at the moment be able to compete in BOV. A variety can only be recognized when there is a lot of them and the ABA and APA give the thumbs up, ten only will they be able to compete at a higher level.

Muddy...so glad you are working on this variety! I have a blue cuckoo cock and as mentioned, his barring isn't as strong as I've seen with the black. His type is excellent, so I guess that's a start!! My problem is finding some cuckoo pullets for him. I guess I'm just not wanting to start from scratch crossing him on blacks...plus I don't really have enough pen space for that many varieties.

The thing is...we need to start showing them in the AOV classes while working on type and color. If I understand correctly there must be documentation of 5 years of breeding from several breeders to apply for recognition with the APA/ABA.

Check with Bren...the qualifying meet for lavenders is this fall in Oklahoma. I'm going to try to make that trip!!

You might try PM'ing or emailing brenTx for the info.
