showing

I wouldn't risk the exposure to disease on the quail. ILT is very virulent in chickens, but it is a death sentence for your whole flock of quail or pheasants..........

You can show quail, my male got reserve champion at fair!!!! YEAH!!!!1

Quail are susceptible to much the same diseases as chickens, the difference is the outcome of those diseases on the quail. A chicken with coryza (for example) probably won't die, just have a 'cold' for a while. A quail with coryza will not only die but pass it around to your other quail, killing them as well. So best not to chance it.

I've shown my Coturnix in the open show at our local fair for the past two years. This year, my daughter as well one of my 4-H club members showed Coturnix as well. They are shown as "Miscellaneous Poultry". They don't compete for Best in Show but they can be named "Poultry Royalty" or "Champion/Reserve Champion Miscellaneous Poultry". The superintendents keep them separated from the other poultry by a 6 foot aisle and only the owner is allowed to handle them. I show them at the fair because it is an opportunity for those of us in the Ag community to display the wide, unique variety of animals that are available. I try to bring as many different varieties as I can in whatever species I am showing (yes, I exhibit other animals too). It's all about public education.

During, and for about 2 weeks after, the fair, I keep all of my animals on vitamin and electrolyte supplements to help combat any illnesses that may be floating around as well as to combat stress issues.
