Shredded Feathers? Please help!!!

Okay. Can I also put some in a big pan of something and kind of sprinkle it on them that way?
Also, I got the DE today and the lady at the feed store said that they can also eat it. Another person on here said that it isn't good for them to breath it. Can they eat it? I can post a picture later today, but I was hoping to dust her later this afternoon.

Yes, they can and will eat it....when you dust them, try to work it down to the skin...you can use wood ashes as well, but since you have DE use it...also could put some in their favorite dust bath holes.....might want to change out the nesting material and put neem oil on the roosts etc. if it's really a problem.

Thanks so much for all the help. I think I'm gonna dust her this afternoon. Maybe put some in their food and sprinkle it in the dustbaths. It's not a real big problem, and I recently moved them into a new warm coop for the winter so everything is new and freshly built. Also, she laid an egg today, can we eat it? Or will it be effected by whatever she has?

Yep, you can eat the egg....and putting DH in their food won't get rid of mites or anything, it's just possibly somewhat good for them

Oh okay, thanks. I just dusted her, and she stills seems a little white after she shook herself off. I tried as best I could to get under to the skin. Will the 'shredded' feathers re-grow or will new ones come in, or will just nothing happen at all? Thanks so much for all the help!!

I'm not sure what will happen with the feathers, I've never had the problem. Perhaps someone else can help with that. I would suspect that the feathers will stay as they are until they fall out on their own.

Okay, thanks for all the help. I have one more question: How do I know that the mites or whatever it is are gone?

Look down in the feathers and see if there is anything crawiling around.....check all over the bird. There asre some threads on here if you do a search that should give you a good idea of what to look for etc.

Okay. aren't mites like not visible to the naked eye though?

From what I understand, you can see them. they are tiny and gray. The thing is if you haven't seen them, they may not be the culprits.
