Shredded redwood mulch, or palm?

I have a ton of gorilla hair type shredded redwood bark mulch, maybe some palm too, its all over my yard and I plan to remove it (we are in subterranean termite central here, not ideal to have wood based mulch). Would that be safe to put under the run for chickens to poop on? (then compost)

Imp- Also if your chickens smoke it ignites easily.
