1) What type of bird , age and weight. Black Copper Maran chicks
2) What is the behavior, exactly. Lethargy, in-coordination, not eating/drinking, death
3) How long has the bird been exhibiting symptoms? First one ten days ago, one a few days later, one this morning and another one this evening.
4) Are other birds exhibiting the same symptoms? It is rapid onset, rapid death Currently no birds are exhibiting symptoms....that could change the next time I look!
5) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma. No
6) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation. Absolutely baffled. I have no idea, nothing has changed.
7) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all. A little water if they are held up to it.
8) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc. Normal
9) What has been the treatment you have administered so far? Tried isolating the sick ones to no avail and administering water/feed if they will take it.
10 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet? If someone knows of something that can be done, I'll do it.
11) If you have a picture of the wound or condition, please post it. It may help. I could take some.
12) Describe the housing/bedding in use. Plastic kids pool with a top made of plastic tubing and plastic mesh. Heat lamp suspended overhead. Plenty of room to go under or get away from the heat. Pine pellets for bedding.
These are chicks I bought from a BYC'er. They were much older than the day olds that I ordered due to malfunction of the incubator and so were a mix of younger chicks and older chicks....all fairly feathered out. I am guesstimating 4-6 weeks old when I got them, a month ago. They have been incredibly healthy. Until about ten days ago.
They have all been housed with some of my own chicks that hatched at about the time I got them, so are slightly younger than these BCM's.
I have seen no tell tale signs that they are sickening. If I see one walking on it's hocks and then seeming immobile I know it will be dead in an hour. THAT FAST. The only ones effected are the BCM's. All of the other chicks are fine (so far!).
From reading the sticky it seems they may have Avian Encephalitis. It is the one that most closely resembles the symptoms. Is there anything I can do to save the rest from this? Will they all get it? HOW did they get it when no one has been anywhere but the brooder?
I would appreciate your advice. Questions....suggestions....anything!
