1) What type of bird , age and weight (does the chicken seem or feel lighter or thinner than the others.)

production Barred Rock, 21 months old, feels in good weight condition.

2) What is the behavior, exactly.

Three days ago she started to stand with a hunched posture and was disinterested in food. She is the head hen in the flock, so normally out front pushing everyone away while she gets first access to anything. The skin covering her crop and lower abdomen are both very red. Her comb is red, except that her comb-tips move toward purple sometimes. She does walk some, but tires almost immediately and goes back to standing hunched.

3) How long has the bird been exhibiting symptoms?

3 days
4) Are other birds exhibiting the same symptoms?

no

5) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma.

no

6) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation.

nothing

7) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all.

She is eating and drinking small amounts. I have restricted her to yogurt and other soft foods because her crop is not clearing.

8) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc.

Yesterday it was just urates and pinky-yellowy tissue. Today there's been some very gooey poop.

9) What has been the treatment you have administered so far?

I gave her a warm bath yesterday and palpated her abdomen. Last night I gave her .01mL of Ivermectin orally, and 250 mg of Cephalexin. I repeated the Cephalexin this morning. I also fed her some olive oil last night and have massaged her crop.

I purchased the materials to drain her abdomen. I'm not sure whether this is the correct course of action, however, so haven't done that.

10 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet?

I would like to completely treat at home. My thought is that she has EYP, and since she is a production bird I'm not very optimistic.

11) If you have a picture of the wound or condition, please post it. It may help.

12) Describe the housing/bedding in use

I use straw in the coop, large-grain sand in my covered run, and dirt in my bigger, un-covered run.

Here are some photos from just after her bath yesterday. She looks like she's walking here, but she was standing with her leg up for a long time. Today her posture is worse than it was yesterday.

I forgot to mention above that I inserted a gloved finger in her cloaca today, and didn't feel an egg. I also moved her hospital kennel inside last night as it was windy here and her comb had begun to turn blue (it was sunny and warm as she dried from her bath, she was fully dry when the wind kicked up).

Hi Deedletree. I am wondering if you figured out what was wrong with your barred rock? I just went out to my coop and found that my speckled Sussex seems to be going thru the same condition. She is young and will be 1 in July. She is all fluffed up, has a bare vent area, and very sloppy...liquid poop hanging on the few feathers she has down there. I've been googling like crazy and can't seem to find any answers. Any insight you may have? Thanks :)
