My 5 month old hen was very sick when she was a chick and we nursed her to health. Now at egg laying age, we’re not sure if she’s laid yet because we have 4 other chickens. Yesterday we noticed the change in behavior, barely moving, not eating, closing her eyes sometimes. We’ve isolated her this morning, gave her an epsom salt bath, made her scrambled egg, put a little NutriDrench in her water. She just pooped and thought maybe someone in this forum could take a look and suggest what might be happening. Thank you.

Do you have a picture of her? Is her tail held up or down? Is her comb getting red yet? How does her crop feel, and is it emptying by the next morning? Can you see if she will eat some watery chicken feed or egg, and drink some fluids with sugar or electrolytes. She might be experiencing some type of reproductive problem, but hard to know for sure.

She just laid an egg with no shell. Tail is up, she has eaten some egg and drank some water. Still sitting down but more alert than yesterday.

The pinkish fleshy material on the egg looks a little like lash material. Can you cut that part open? Can you get some antibiotics, such as enrofloxacin 10% liquid from Jedds.com or amoxicillin? Amoxicillin is hard to obtain these days. I also would get some human calcium citrate with vitamin D, and give her 300-600 mg daily for a week to see if her shells become hard. The latest dosage for enrofloxacin I have read is is 0.1 ml per kg (each 2.2 pounds) given orally twice a day 12 hours apart. Egg withdrawal is vague, so I would wait one month.
