Sick African goose

I could not get anyone to respond to me a few weeks ago when I had a very sick gosling...red around the eyes, snotty nose, lethargy...not eating...skinny...no one would help...my vet does not do birds and everyone else was busy or out of town...so I made this little guy a cocktail of what I did have...I had Keflex...I b roke a capsule in to a dish, added sugar, and airborne...you know that immune booster stuff people take...I wrapped that baby in a towel, got a syringe and we rocked in the recliner all day and about every half hour or so, I would give him 2 ccs of the mix...that little guy is alive and well today and running around the yard with his best buddy, Curly, the Khaki drake...I don't actually reccomend that but I was desperate to keep him alive...he was better the next day and continued to improve with one more day of a few ccs of the cocktail every couple of hours...

WOW nice impromptu vet skills.

1 cup water, half keflex capsule, airborne tab, and teaspoon of sugar...it was a shot in the dark but it worked...I had to do something or give up and watch him die...

Yes, Thank you, he's much better. Now I have a gosling that can't stand and walk very well. She keeps on falling over. She is eating and drinking water pretty well when she's by herself. I'm thinking about giving her pedialyte. Do you think it's ok? I gave her polyvisol yesterday and she starting shivering very badly. Don't want to do that again.

Thanks again,

Cindy

Hello everyone,

I know what you mean about getting help. I know people are busy and some people haven't experienced what we've experienced.

I know some people have access to the funds to build nice pens and elaborate housing for their feathered babies, but I DONT. I sometimes wish that I didn't start this because of the lack of sufficient funds to do what I need to do for my feathered babies, but I do have them and I'm doing the best I can for them.

I have had sick chickens and ducks, but never a goose until last week. I do have a muddy situation in their pens which causes ponds of muddy water when it rains. I have put platforms made of plywood in them but they still get to the sides of the platforms and eat whatever is there. It's kindof a lost cause because they have eaten all of the vegetation in their pens. I would like to move their pens but I don't have the ability to do so.

My gosling is eating good when by herself. She just can't walk or suppot herself. I was looking out the window at her yesterday and she tried to walk and well on her back. This broke my heart. I'm at a lost of what to do. Don't think she drank any pedialyte and the polyvisol caused her to shiver.

I'm just at a lost and praying that somehow she'll recover and make it to grow into a beautful goose. She's part buff and embden.

I don't have any sage words of advice. I just wanted to pass along some sympathy.

I hope she pulls through. Have you tried some treats to tempt her into consuming more? Mine like applesauce mixed with yoghurt. Could she have a niacin deficiency? Brewer's yeast would help with that.

Can you bring her inside for a while to keep her warm and dry? You can use just about anything to make a little home for her. That way you can add the polyvisol to her drinking water instead of in her mouth directly. When I was giving the plylvisol to my duckling the way it dripped and all that I was never sure I was giving her the right amount. Or you can get niacin tablets and put them in the water. Someone else will have to tell you how much per liquid amount.

Do bring her in if you can, so you can keep your eye on her all the time.

I'm going to bring her in. I'm sure there's something I can put her in. I just hope she's still alive when I go out there this morning. It's too dark now. She drank all of her pedialyte yesterday. But she was on her back again one more yesterday when I checked on h er. I'm also taking her to a avian vet today. Don't know where or how but I'm taking her.

I wanted to try to keep her outside so she could be with her family but your right I really need her here with me.

I'll let you know what the vet says. Hopefully it's not too bad.

Cindy
