Sick Ameraucana Hen. Mucous in mouth. Please help!!

She needs fluids for about 24 hours before you attempt to force feed her. Give fluids at 15 ml per pound every 4-6 hours. Also okay to give a couple ml or corn syrup a couple of times to get her blood sugar up. She also needs to be kept in a warm room, 80-85 degrees is ideal.

Don't want to scare you, but mucus in the mouth can be a sign the the dying process has started.

Go to petsmart or petco and get 16" to 18" of aquarium air line and some Kaytee Baby Bird Food, then go to Tractor Supply and get a large 30-60ml syringe that it will fit on. You will need to modify the end of the tube by melting it with a lighter to make it smooth so that it doesn't injure the esophagus and crop. Lots of fluids, and if she lives through the night, you can start the baby bird food tomorrow.

Kathy,

Thank you so much. I have been giving here the Save a Chick electrolytes mixed with water. I mixed 1 pack to 3/4 gallon of water, so it is slightly concentrated.Yes, I agree that she was in the dying process. She couldn't stand at all. I have been giving her fluids every hour or so, about 20 ml.

She weighs 4.5 LB.s so I will give her about 70 ml of fluids every 4 hours. It appears that she is progressing. About an hour ago, she was drinking the electrolyte water from a small glass bowl on her own. Earlier she couldn't even hold her head up. That is great progress from last night. She can stand for about 3 to 4 minutes on her own now. I will get the Tubing and Syringe as soon as Pet Smart and Tractor supply open tomorrow . I have a little hope now that she might make it. There is very little mucus in the mouth now that she has been ingesting fluids for the last 18 hours or so..

I will do everything that you suggested. I cannot tell you how much I appreciate your help! I will post the progress. She was definitely dying yesterday afternoon.

Thank you so very much Kathy!

Wow. I am seeing real improvement. I have been coaxing her to drink fluids, keeping her warm (around 80 Degrees) I gave her a little natural unflavored yogurt and she is eating it like crazy. She is much more alert now. This has been a great improvement. You are absolutely right Kathy. "It's amazing what a little water, sugar and heat can do for them."

She is pooping a lot of green stuff along with some yellow still, but in larger amounts.
Should be a good thing to get all that out of her!

She seems to be doing good. I still have her inside where it is warm and giving her electrolytes and probiotics. Now it appears that she has worms. I ordered Valbazen and Safeguard. I think that I will give her the first round with the Valbazen. I will be deworming the entire flock again as well.
