Very sorry for your loss

Thankyou both for your condolences, I cannot believe I'm crying over this......

We are beginning Valbazen treatment today, and Astrid's sister is beginning to eat and move around much better so far.

Sorry for your loss. I can hear the happines in your post about the other though, so hang tough, and let us know how she does.

Just passing this on from someone else--was told to read the 'black dates on the white stitching on feed bags--for example 03 aug LC for what we buy would be August 3 from Lake City. That is the date it was packed...

Was told not to buy anything over 30 days--just passing this on--
I bought from a feed store months ago, and their dates were by julian calendar--so that number was like 275 and no month. Found out what I bought was 4 months old--then they said nothing ever sits at their store, and I called the manufacturer which was the next state over and they said they didn't have anything that old to ship. So it became a he said she said.

I think they weren't rotating bag and kept putting the new ones on top.

My birds were pretty sick...

I have a back room in our trailer and I keep all the feed in that room, so it is temperature controlled. Not always realistic for large farms...

Just my thoughts...may or may not work for everyone.

To Schwartzfarmnc--Sorry for your loss...I have cried so deeply for my birds when they have passed...They sure steal our hearts. Please send me a personal message if you just want to talk...or reminisce of all the wonderful times.

Chicken people are loving and compassionate--we are all here for you!!

Schwartzfarmnc--Just one more thought--never be ashamed of being so tenderhearted, especially with animals. It is a wonderful trait. Some say the closest thing to God are his creatures, his animals. For example, dog spelled backgrounds is God. No accident in my view.

Thinking of you...

*UPDATE*

It's been a few days since my last post and I wanted to inform anyone who wants to know the latest on our sick Barred Rocks.

We buried Astrid over the weekend, but some goods news is that her sister Ripple is feeling much better after the vet's visit and her antibiotic shot. We have wormed all the girls with Valbazen, and all seem to be doing just fine, we will worm again in 10 days. We will never know for sure what killed our precious BR but she had all the symptoms of parasites or cocci, but we can almost be sure it was not cocci, there was never any blood. I think this was our first learing experience with chickens and worming, and from the beginning I did not wish to worm the girls unless there was a problem, and that mindset may have led to the death of Astrid. I will now worm the girls twice a year, since learning that our county here in the mountains have had a bad year for parasites and we need to keep them as healthy as possible, so I would like for everyone reading this to take a step back and re-think their worming predjudice and consider doing so for the health of your birds.

I also believe we will always have ACV added to their water even though we keep a very clean and tight ship, you can never be too careful.

So sorry. I lost a pet Barred Rock on August 25. She was only 17 months old. What state do you live in? I wonder about parasites, too? My girl had picked out her chest feathers. Usually associated with lice, but I suspect fatty liver disease, but she seemed just fine the morning of the day she died. It is so hard not knowing.
