Sick Buff Orpington hen. Please, I need help!!!!!!!

Thanks,

Where are you getting your bedding from. What kind of bedding are you using. I think my Lulu might have had some other issues because, out of about 23 birds she is the only who has been affected. I wonder if the bugs attack the weak. I am not sure what preventative I am gonna use yet. The biggest problem I have is knowing how much to use of these products. For instance after I get rid of the problem with the Seven 5 % I am gonna put in about 3 inches of sand throughout the whole coop. That way hopefully if there is anything left I will bury it. Then I am gonna put in some DE as preventative but, I don't know how much to put. I don't know if I put it on the ground before I put the bedding in or on top or both. UGGGGH!!!!!!!!!!!! It all seems so confusing but, I just want to do it right so this doesn't happen again. I think I might give them a wormer once or twice a year for good measure and just not eat any of the eggs they lay for a couple of weeks. I never wanted to give them any of this kind of stuff but, I guess it is better losing my birds. The wormer people suggested to me was for goats and I tell you that really scares me. I was just looking at a catalog for Cackle Hatchery and I noticed that they sell wormer for chickens. I didn't realize they had some actually for chickens I am getting some of that. I just really wish I realized al of this before I lost Lucy. Have you ever lost a bird to worms, fleas or mites etc.

Oh yea, I feel your pain about having to clean out your coop over and over. I had just cleaned out the coop about a week before all this happened. I had removed all of the bedding and replaced and since this has happened I am doing it all over again.:barnie  Not to mention the coop is about 20 feet by 25 feet. I like having a good size coop but, dang it takes me about 4 hours of non stop cleaning to get out all the old chips and they aren't exactly light when you have to carry them to the compost. I am sure having to shovel in all that heavy sand is gonna be fun.:he  Sorry I am done fusing now.

Good luck with getting rid of your mites. Let me know how it goes.

I buy the Dejno's pine bedding from fleet farm............... and I'm almost positive that is where they are coming from,
No I haven't yet lost any of my birds to any illness, injury, or predator. but I have only had my chickens since last March......... so I most certainly am not an expert, but I have read a lot on the net before even ordering them, I belonged to this site b4 I got them as well that is the best place anyone with chickens can go there so much info here and so many great ppl to ask for help, I have bought several books on chicken keeping, stories guide has alot of info in it, also I sub to Mother earth news and backyard poultry, so I do like to read about how to best keep them healthy and happy, so far I have been very lucky except for these dam mites. I sprinkle the DE under and over my bedding in the nests in the dust bathes, at least 1tx a week usually when I pick out the stall, I use alot also when I completely clean out the old bedding and put in new. I use a kids sand sifter fill it with a cup and sprinkle a good coat around, I do it when the girls are outside so they aren't exposed to the dust, which can be harmful to their lungs.......also use a dust mask when cleaning your pens, it is also not good for you too breath it either, neither is the dust, and gunk the chickens create.\
I used sand as bedding in my 10x12 coop last year and not once have I seen a mite flea or anything, until this late winter when I started using pine bedding because I thought it would help make keep the coop warmer over our severely cold late winter early spring............big mistake.............I'm going back to sand asap..........tomorrow actually, as soon as I get to Menards to fill my truck full of play sand, or to the quarry to get a load. Well again so sorry and I hope everything gets good for you and none of your other chickies ever cross the rainbow bridge b4 there time again.......... Hugz Kim

So sorry. It's so amazing how they touch us, even with brief encounters. I do agree that some animals' immune systems are just inadequate. I had one chicken with wet stools and scaly leg mites and no matter how much I tried, she would only improve while being treated and then her symptoms would return immediately after management. I would isolate her for treatment and so no one else was treated, but no other chicken seemed symptomatic. Their legs and poops were perfect. She seemed happy otherwise, so I just treated her scaly legs with a vegetable oil soak and vaseline every few days to keep them softer and the mites at bay as it wasn't prudent to keep her on antibiotics indefinitely. I'm sorry for your heartache. Just seeing her lovely coop with run, I know that although too brief for you, she had a wonderful life and was very lucky to have been "hatched into your brood."

So sorry to hear about Lulu.

When I do a complete cleanout of the coop, I use Orange Guard citrus oil based spray in all cracks and crevices, nests and around the roosts. It is safe to use around the birds (not made to put on them, but in their area) and smells great. You can get it at ACE Hardware and if they don't have it, they can order it for you. It is a natural product and even kills termites if it contacts them.

I do sprinkle DE in the nests and always have. I have never, ever had lice/mites in my flock and I've kept chickens going on 7 years now so I am a DE user, just not as a wormer.

The only adult bird I ever bought came to me with lice and he was dusted with DE as was his bedding (while he was in quarantine) and that fixed his issue before he went into my flock, but not one of my hens has ever had lice or mites, probably because they never got a foothold in the nests and my birds have great GA dirt to dustbathe in under the coop and around my house.

Not sure what Cackle is selling, but there is no actual chemical wormer approved for poultry other than Wazine, which only kills roundworms. All others we use are off-label. Could be one of those with what they consider natural ingredients.

Also, some individual birds in particular seem more susceptible to mites/lice than others, I've read.
It was Wazine that Cackle had. So I am guessing if it only treats round worms its not all that affective? Yea, I wonder if my Lucy was just more susceptible then my other birds because, I don't see flea eggs on anyone else or any signs of being ill. Oh well I am gonna treat everything and everyone to be on the safe side. It is gonna take me a few days to get it all done. It is a super big job.

Thanks,
I was about to say that it sounds like it is time to switch the bedding you are using but, I see you are already doing that. :0) So when you use sand do you put chips on top or just use the sand?

Thanks,

Yea, it is crazy how much they touch. All week about once a day I will just find myself crying when I think about my little Lulu. We got her from the local feed store, she was one of the first chickens ever brought home. We brought home 6 little one day old chicks that day. I have often wondered if she was born with health problems. She had a big beautiful red comb but often the tip would turn purple. It did that all her life and she was about 2 and a half years old. I wasn't sure what it meant when the end of their comb looks purpleish but, I thought maybe she wasn't the healthiest bird. I think that is possibly why she is the one that had the fleas and worms. None of my others show any signs or symptoms. Hope your little girl with the mites is doing okay.

Just the sand, they seem to do well on it, its fairly easy to clean with a Goliath scoop, I should have never switched them to the bedding....argggggggg Fleet is gonna take back the bedding, and reimburse me for all of it, even what I must now dump out, and I'm calling the Dejno's company with a huge complaint.........maybe I can get them to pay to clean up the mess it made, because it will cost me a buit to buy more seven, flea soap, and spray, I also don't know what to do with the bad bedding from the coops....... I don't want to compost it cuz my chickens are now out and about and I don't them bathing in it and getting them back, and from what I have read the mites can live quite awhile without the host.....soooo any suggestions anyone might have I'll take alll I can get right now....... Hugs DD Kim
