this is the 3rd chick I have had that has been sick. I have already lost 2- 1 Just died with no signs of sick the other no signs of being sick but was half alive and lifeless couldnt stand up and died about 5 mins after I found it. The other 2 have seemed sick like really sleepy and have had adnormal poo's I thought it was coccidia so have been treating them for it and they have been getting better I have been treating them since monday. This evening I checked on my chicks and found one of them laying flat shaking (But not cold its in a brooder with light) Can't stand up and is shaking closes its eyes but if I tap on the brooder opens its eyes and cries but cannot get up just shakes. I don't know what eles to do. I don't know whats wrong...

Heres some info....
Chicks are 3 weeks old was in with RIR chicks was eating SOMTIMES what mother would eat scratch I'd throw to her or others in the flock was kept in the same pen as I have had other chicks that never had any problems. I am at a loss help me!

Where did you get the chicks? Were they vaccinated for cocci? Are you feeding them medicated chick starter?

These chicks come from my own flock hatched under one of my own broody hens. The chicks have been on medicated chick starter since they were hatched.

The chick is suffering and I do not have the heart to kill it. I don't know what to do....

how heartbreaking for you ...
I am unclear on the housing situation... (I always keep mamma and chickies separate and separate mamma from chickies to eat her adult feed ) Were these out and about in between all the other birds?

I'm looking through the Chicken health Handbook, some stuff you might want to look up:

Runting Syndrome: They get it after receiving contaminated vaccine, causes poor growth, abnormal feathering, sometimes paralysis

Streptococcosis: sometimes lameness, head tremors, yellow diarrhea, fever

Could be a lot of things, don't know if those will help any.

this is what the chicks are doing..

They start acting sleepy not normal running around and scratching like normal chicks.

Adnormal poo's kinda watery somtimes clear looking somtimes looks a lil red.

pulled in neck and kinds puffed up with droopy wings.

then lifeless laying flat cannot lift head or stand up keeps eyes closed.

They are on medicated chick feed has ate scratch before.

On a different page it says that convulsions and paralysis is from algae poisoning--maybe check your water? Maybe the food's contaminated?

Are the joints swollen?

Jerky movements, falling over, typical in 1-3 week olds could be epidemic tremor

can't walk, dehydration, typical in 3-6 week olds: Kinky back

There's another thing that says chicks from 1-12 weeks, it's common for "sudden death syndrome."

Hope something in those lead you to the right direction!

sounds to me like cocci... get the med for that and give treatment dosage (preferably amprollium but you can treat with sulmet too)
keep separate from the other birds in a temp stable environment .

Some diarrhea possible things:

Campylobacteriosis is apparantally common in chicks.

Whitish or water diarrhea, may be bloody: Infectious bursal disease

It says possibly cocci too, but you know that.
