Sick chick Cocci? Bloated crop, please help

Hi, this is my first post here. We recently got 4 chicks, 2 Easter Eggers and 2 Silkies. they’re about 3 weeks old now. Everything was going great and they were all super healthy and active until yesterday morning I came down and our favorite EE looked a bit off, she was puffed up and not moving around very much. I immediately knew something was wrong. Checked the brooder for odd poos but didn’t see anything worrisome. I took “Worm Toes” out of the brooder right away and she did a VERY watery poo while I was holding her, a few watery poos later I saw some flecks of blood and small yellow chunks with some white slimey stuff as well. I figure coccidiosis?, she’s got the stance and lethargy, wasn’t eating, drinking a bit. Most of yesterday went like that, I did notice her crop seems bloated like a water balloon almost and got bigger throughout the day. I gave her some probiotic/electrolytes/honey water and my husband drove to get Corid and I did a French dose at 2pm as well as put in her water and the rest of my flocks water in case. At one point yesterday I fed her some egg yolk drops from a syringe, and a few hours after the Corid she was eating a few crumbles but not much at all. Looking a bit more like herself by the end of last night, but not a huge improvement, definitely didn’t seem worse. Now today, woke up at 6 to check-she’s made it through the night and lots of poos in her box, very little blood and some did have some brown in them looking slightly more normal. She got up and drank a ton, pecked at the crumbles for a bit and maybe ate a few. I felt her crop ans it’s still very bloated/watery feeling and I notice her swallowing for a long time after she drinks and sometimes when she’s walking around and hadn’t had a drink. This is what I’m wondering about-what kind of crop issues are associated with cocci? And do you think this is cocci or something else? I don’t know what else would give her the poops like she’s had? I’m wondering if the crop needs to be addressed as well as continue with Corid? Yesterday when I was holding her after giving her egg yolk mixture I rubber her crop and some came up-not stinky or anything, looked like it did when it went in. Could she have a blockage causing all of this? Or is this cocci? The brooder is a huge box lined with in bleached paper towels, they’ve been on starter and did have some chopped up wheat grass a few times as well. I haven’t had chickens since I was a kid so this is really tough for me. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you so much! Lisa & Worm Toes

A fresh poo...sorry for the photo but I figured you all are used to it. Hard to see but there’s a bit of bloody stuff on the brown part. Would she still be pooping a normal amount of times if her crop was blocked? Does the pooping mean things are still functioning and maybe is shouldn’t worry so much about the crop and it feeling like it does is part of cocci? I don’t know if I should try to empty it?

Hey Lisa! I know this was last month, but wondering how this chick ended up doing. Thank you for posting these pictures because I have one that is IDENTICAL to what you are describing and her poop looks like yours did! I’m treating with Corid but she’s just barely making it.

Hi, my chick pulled through. It was cocci, I treated with Corid, did the drench dose and also in the water, drenched for maybe 5 days and put in the water for 2 weeks. I separated the sick chick for the duration of the drench, but did let her see her flock mates while
I supervised so I could clean up any poo immediately. I feel like the contact helped keep her spirits up, I started this a day or 2 after the Corid when she was beginning to pep up a bit. The other chicks were also on the Corid in the water so none of them got sick. I made a mix of honey, (coconut) yogurt, electrolyte, and probiotic powders and put this on the top of her beak
To get some calories in her, even just the plain honey seemed to help
Sustain her until she was eating again. I pretty much checked on her every hour for the first 2 days and spent most of those days sitting by the box watching her and cleaning up and poop. I made a little heating “cave” with a heat pad for her as well so she could stay warm.
After the Corid treatment I started using Poulty Drench (I think that’s hat it’s called) nutrient supplement in the water, also I feed (coconut) yogurt with liquids vitamin E in the mornings. I had to add some honey so they would eat this bc they don’t like the vitamin E flavor.

I meant to say I put the honey on the *tip of her beak, not top. When I did
This she would lick it off and I think this really helped give her the energy she needed to start eating and drinking again. I also did this with raw egg yolk but it wasn’t as successful. Is definitely try this if your chick is fading.
I started seeing improvement maybe 6-8 hrs after the first Corid drench, just that she was moving around a bit more and started drinking much more. Later the first day she pecked at the starter food a bit, though she didn’t really start eating much until maybe day 3.

Issue resolved once she was able to eat more, I think it was causes my an imbalance of bacteria due to the cocci-a symptom it seems

Also, I should mention that she did start to poop some
Bloody bits, the poops progressed to be sort of clear slimy (egg white sort) Stuff with some red streaks, sometimes white streaks, and also some yellow chunks at times. I waited for her poops to look normal again before returning her to the brooder with the other chicks full time.

I think the best thing to try right away would be the honey on her beak to get some calories in her-you can also mix some electrolyte powder with it because she’s probably dehydrated.

Also if you’re not doing a drench dose of the Corid Id definitely try that, I just put a few drops of straight Corid on her beak so she could lick it off.

She was given to me looking very rough. She was the smallest of her flock mates. The picture of her in the grass was from Wednesday. The other picture was yesterday. It seemed like when I separated her from the others it actually made things worse. Like her health took even more of a nose dive. You have no idea how much hope this gives me! She’s been about the same for 2 days now. Im giving her food and water with a medicine dropper. I’m about to drench dose her again tonight with the Corid. I started this last night. Put vinegar in their water. Apple cider vinegar(the natural mother’s stuff). A few drops will help clear parasites. Start feeding your babies herbs. Most don’t know that oregano(even the dried stuff) can help. You can even give chickens natural honey, and more. Give them grass, and they will even eat a lot of wild weeds like dandelions that have healing properties. They can digest these and it will help them heal. I have often mixed oatmeal(it’s okay, but once a day, or every couple of days with oregano, and cinnamon(a natural respiratory cure for humans and animals to help) with honey. You can give chickens small amounts of green onions(won’t harm them), because onions also help in healing birds and humans. Above all, don’t panic. If you see parasites you can bathe your birds in a warm vinegar bath to remove any mites or other visible parasites. It is possible to hair-dry a bird if needed, but do so on a mild setting with some distance while holding the bird if this is needed(what I do is make sure it’s not too hot for me, because that means it’s too hot for them, and they will let you know anyways by their movements. I hope this helps. By the way, before domestication, chickens would bring natural greens(herbs) to their nests and such. This should help, but also make sure you manage their coup from having too much chicken droppings(which can be stored to be used in gardens, but must have a month to dry at least). Hope this helps by the way( I’m an avid researcher).
