So my mom sent me this video today of one her 1 week old baby chicks.
You can see it’s breathing heavily and sneezing.
She has already lost one chick in her new flock.
The other day I suggested turning down the heat because maybe they were over-heating. I also suggest probiotics in their water (which I have always done with my chicks). She said they were getting pasty butt the other day, so she has been keeping them nice and clean.
I researched types of worms. Maybe gapeworm?
But they’re all so young and wouldn’t the medicated chick feed take care of any parasites?
What’s worse, could this be contagious to other babies?? Has anyone ever seen this in chicks?

Please help! She does not want to lose anymore!

They don't have parasites or gape worm, but medicated feed doesn't do anything for that. It just treats/prevents coccidiosis. Pasty but is from too much heat, have her pull the lamp off so they can cool down for a few minutes. Does the brooder have a cooler half? What is the brooder?

Yes the brooder is big enough to where they can go to the other side where it’s cooler if they want.
She got them from rural king tho and just from what I’ve heard, they’re not treated the best.. I’m hoping that’s not the reason. We just don’t know what else the reasoning could be that 2 of them are already falling ill.

Shipping stress.. or any stress is another cause of pasty butt.. which BTW.. I've even had to clean up a chicks butt from under a broody hen (even with nutrition SPOT on).. it's not only caused by heat. Pasty but is deadly fast.

Not every chick that hatches will continue to thrive.. once they're digestive system is done using the yolk (around day 3) then it has to switch over.. be connecting with food and water, and pooping properly.

Medicated feed is LOW dose amprolium.. and works by mimicking thiamine to starve out and slow the growth of coccidia ONLY (no other internal or external parasite will be effected) because that's what they feed on. Coccidiosis MAY/can still occur, and require treatment (with Corid or a sulpha drug). Supplementing anything with B vitamins (thiamine specifically) ultimately negates it's effect. Chicks under 6 days old cannot have been suffering from coccidiosis as it takes that long before symptoms can appear.

Gasping and gaping for air or breathing heavily is VERY common as organs fail and chicks begin to pass. The sneezing may be caused by the bedding. If the chicks came from somewhere else I might be questioning respiratory disease.. but that is *less* likely coming from hatchery/feed store.

If crackling is present when breathing.. it is essentially a drowned chick that got dunked too far and inhaled water.. they usually become lethargic and have a VERY hard time recovering when that happens.

Hope the rest of Mom's chicks continue to thrive! :fl

For me.. Poultry Nutri Drench is a better choice than electrolytes (or in addition to).. when trying to recover from something unknown. It's formulated with amino acids and is patented for rapid absorption, not having to go through the digestive tract to achieve it's potential!
