Sick chick wont open eye

Hi MrsB, I know that cockroaches are transmitters, because the worms hitchhike on them, but thought the worms existed in the environment independent of the bugs? Hadn't heard where the bird has to eat the each to possibly become infected? Good info.

From what I understand the cockroach acts as the intermediate host, which this parasite requires. I also read it can come from eating wood in an area where the cockroaches are.

Thank You so much! I am having my husband stop at tractor supply on his way home to pick up this stuff! Hopefully it will help. Thank you so much for your help!

The dosage for Corid 20% is:

1.5 teaspoons (NO LESS) per gallon of water for 5-7 days... Make sure it's the ONLY water they can access during this time.

After every one has completed their round of Corid, add some vitamins (without iron) to the water to help their systems recover. :)

If they don't have the Corid powder, you can get the liquid 9.6%...

That's 2 teaspoons per gallon for 5-7 days... Same instructions as the powder. :)

Hope that helps! Keep us posted.

Thank you Thank you Thank you!! I am so grateful to have a site like this where I can get answers to all my chicken related questions! This morning at 2 am I went to check on my little chick and give her some corid/water since she wasnt drinking on her own yet. After giving her a little I put her down next to the food I had left in the box for her and she started pecking at the ground so I sprinkled a little food around her and she gobbled it all up! First time I had seen her eat in atleast 24 hours! I checked on her again at 3:45am and she was walking around and eating food from the dish by herself and also had her bad eye partially open. I still havent seen her drink from her dish yet so I am still giving her corid/water by syringe but she seems to be gaining strength as she is LOUDLY protesting when I pick her up. As of right now I can hear her happily peeping in her box. So thank you all again for the help! I am so grateful!

You're very welcome, and I am thrilled we were able to make a difference. :)

It could be, too, that she's coming off of a little shock from a potential eye injury.

Keep an eye on her, make sure she stays warm enough (90-95 degrees), and keep up the great work!

Let us know!

Little chick is still doing great. Her eye is almost completely open with just a small bit of swelling. And she is eating and drinking on her own now. I have 2 more questions: 1: how long should I wait to put her back with the other chicks? I was kinda thinking once her eye shows no more signs of swelling? I don't want the other chicks to start picking on her. And 2: should I also give my adult hens corid? They've never had any actual contact with the chicks but it's possible if she did have cocci, that I could have spread it to the adults or from them to the chicks. I am careful to wash my hands after handling the chicks/hens and mucking out the coop and brooder but I assume I could have still passed it on?

When you do Corid, run it through the ENTIRE flock as a preventative. :) 5-7 days, only water they can access... Run vitamins through all water after the course is done.

You could put her back in and monitor the behavior for a while. If everything seems okay, go for it! If they start pecking at her, remove and wait until all the swelling goes down.

Do you have a white light or a red brooder lamp?

Great.

I hear a white brooder light can cause pecking.

Sounds like you're doing everything right. :)

I hope this cures what's ailing you!

Keep us posted.
