Sick chick

Well, I had to leave to meet a client for an hour, and I came back and she looks much better. She still seems to be eating a lot, but this time when I put the grit in the pen, she scarfed it up with the others. She's also not standing around with that dazed, sleepy look with her feathers puffed out. I'm thinking that you guys were right, she had something stuck in her throat and it's out now. I'm going to keep a close eye on her. She's giving me a terrible scare!

My 4 1/2 week old RIR was doing the exact same thing last night, so I came on here to find out what to do... Like someone suggested, I opened her beak and looked inside. I thought it looked like maybe something was at the back of her throat that wasn't supposed to be, but I wasn't sure. So I looked into another chick's mouth for comparison and decided something wasn't quite right with the RIR. So, I got a Q-tip, pulled off most of the cotton, and smoothed the rest of the cotton down. The first few times I opened her beak, she screamed like I was killing her, but after several tries, she settled down and got used to it. After a bit, she would let me open her beak and look inside without a fight. Then I touched the Q-tip on her tongue a few times, until she got used to that. Then I rubbed the Q-tip from back to front on her tongue, It took a few tries, and the first few I didn't really try to touch her tongue, as much as to just gradually convince her that she would survive, lol. Well, after slowly and gradually getting her used to the process, I was able to swipe the back of tongue a few times, and the Q-tip caught the end of a 1 1/2 inch long gauzy like strand/string, that she had tried to eat! As soon as I got that out, she was fine!

My Welsummer did the same thing at 2 days old, right after I got her home, shipped from Ideal. I made her drink water and it went away. At that time, I thought it was dehydration after her trip, but now I'm convinced she had a little something stuck in her throat.

Anyway, now all's well with us. Hope your gal feels better soon!
