I have a 4 yo barred hen that's not doing great. She became weak, lost feathers on her abdomen and vent area. Her crest and waddles were initially red. Now 3 days later the are limp and losing color.

We took her to our vet after checking for mites, parasites (obvious signs), injury, maybe she was egg bound or suffering from inteatinal infection. We, on a home search found nothing. The vet found nothing. She even did an xray and everything looked okay.

She started on antibiotics, b12, and is getting parrot baby food to supplement her feed. She is being fed.

Now I have another bird missing chest feathers. She is otherwise okay. The flock of 12 averages 7-8 eggs per day. It's a mixed flock including some lesser layers and a few older hens. That number has dropped to 4 or 5.

Any ideas?

Has she been hanging out in the nest boxes? How does her crop feel—empty and flat, full, hard, doughy, or puffy/soft? Can you check it first thing in the morning before eating? Is she eating or drinking anything? Can you mix some watery chicken feed and some scrambled egg bits or tuna, and offer it? What does her poop look like, and pics are welcome. Are they overcrowded? What are you feeding?

Has she been hanging out in the nest boxes? No

How does her crop feel—empty and flat, full, hard, doughy, or puffy/soft? Flat, not hard or doughy

Can you check it first thing in the morning before eating? That was as of this morning

Is she eating or drinking anything? She was eating hut not much. That turned to not eating. I've been hand feeding the last 2 days. She does drink water.

Can you mix some watery chicken feed and some scrambled egg bits or tuna, and offer it? I will try in the morning.

What does her poop look like, and pics are welcome. She had loose poop now not much but looking more normal. She is nit getting up a lot. Last night she looked like she was ready to pass. Today she is more alert but still laying. She can stand but its labored.

Are they overcrowde? No. Plenty of room. Although they all like one nesting box. We do have a drainage problem with the ground in the run. When it rains for several days, as it has, it gets very soupy. This is my concern. Its dry now.

What are you feeding? Nutrena layer. Meal worms, scratch, occassional fruit and vegetables.

Thank you for the questions. I'll get some photos in the morning.

Well, she didn't make it through the night. :( Here's a poop photo. I hope it's not contagious but worry it is.

Suggestions on next steps?
