Last week, one of my 2 1/2 yr old hens became suddenly ill. Her breathing was heavy and her abdomen felt like a water balloon. After she died, I opened her up to find her uterus full and distended with light yellow, cloudy fluid. ALSO, her uterus was full of something very similar to mozzarella cheese balls, lots of them (a bit smaller than her eggs normally were). I recently had a coccidia outbreak (diagnosed) in a nearby pen (8 week old pullets) but figured the reproductive tract disease of this hen was unrelated to the digestive issue of my young pullets.
NOW, I have another sick older hen who has distanced herself from the flock and sleeping often. Any ideas?
Related? Unrelated? Any idea what my first hen died from?
