Sick chicken help! (Watching my moms chickens)

You asked of a way to make Pox more comfortable - you could try a chicken sling. Many people make them for lame chickens and they can really aid as you can fix their feed and water in front of them. Here are a few pics. You just need two holes for their feet and one for their poop! download.jpg download (1).jpg download (2).jpg

Edit to add: You can just use clamps to hold the material in place at the sides. Any material will do.. old t-shirt/towel/sheet etc.

If she has not pooped, that can be a bit concerning especially seeing as how you said her vent is covered in poop. If the dried poo is stopping her from pooping that could be causing a ton of issues. I would maybe try giving her a warm bath and trying as best as you can to get all that poop off of her vent. It is good that she is drinking so much, I would keep trying to feed her bits of scrambled egg or I have heard some tuna fish can be good too. I hope she continues to improve!

Can you try standing her up that next time you are feeding her, to see if she can balance or move both legs. She does sound possibly like she might have Mareks disease, but she may have been injured in a fall off a perch or weak from dehydration or being kept from food. What do her droppings look like? You can put paper towel on top of her bedding to get a better look at them. I would make a small bowl of water with her chicken feed to get more water into her.

So many things can affect chickens, from being bullied, injured, or suffering weakness from an illness. Checking inside her vent with a finger inserted one inch can let you know if she might have an egg stuck. The curled under toes can be a sign of both vitamin B2 (riboflavin) deficiency, but also can be a sign of Mareks or an injured leg. Human BComplex vitamins 1/4 daily crushed or ground onto some food can treat that. Here is some reading about Mareks diseases where symptoms can vary in each chicken:

You may look into making her a chicken sling to get her upright and sitting in front of food and water. I would make it high enough for her feet to not touch the floor. A piece of material with two holes for the feet and a poop hole in the rear can be clamped onto a rubbermaid container. Here are some examples:

She’s more active this afternoon. Shes moving her tail and wings but not enough to actually get up. She’s flopping her one foot up and down. Here’s the some pictures of her face. No poop yet. I’ll work on cleaning her up and the chicken swing. I put the vit B in her water. Still not really eating. Should I get some chicken vitamins? My mom said no vet. The foot pictured is the move shes flopping up and down.

Thanks everyone!

Hi Chicksitter196,
Welcome to the forum, and sorry you are here under these circumstances!
Poor Pox, she's not looking good.
Do you know has your Mom ever had Merek's in her flock? It looks a bit like it...
You are really looking after this little one very well. Well done to you - not having experience with chickens (or even if you did!) and coming across this is no easy undertaking.
Does your Mom stock any poultry vitamins? Such as Nutri-drench? A few direct drops into Pox's beak would not be a bad idea.
Is there any possibility Pox got into some spoiled food/mold??
If you could, a close up shot of Pox's face and eyes may be helpful. Also a picture of her that curled up foot, and one of poop. (odd request I know, but it can help).
You are doing everything you can. Is vet care a possibility?

No poop is a bit alarming. Normally they poop many times a day. Can you check her vent for a stuck egg by putting on a disposable glove, lubing a finger, and inserting it 1 inch inside her vent. It will fill hard if there is an egg or soft like tissue if no egg.

Are you feeding them raw potato peelings or raw beans? Chickens can not have those things. Just type in to google things that chickens can not eat and they will have a list and a list of things they can eat. Maybe she ate too many.

She might have a soft egg in her. One of my hens did that. I used mineral oil on her vent. You might want to ask a vet if you have a chicken vet in your area.

How is pox
Did you check if she’s egg bound
Has she pooped yet
Is she drinking and eating
Is she sleeping a lot
Does she have any bumps or anything on the bottom of her feet
How is her comb and wattles based on how red
Is she still lethargic

If she has not pooped, that can be a bit concerning especially seeing as how you said her vent is covered in poop. If the dried poo is stopping her from pooping that could be causing a ton of issues. Thank you. She pooped! It wasn’t a dark olive green. Similar consistency to vegetable purée
