Hi, we have a chicken that just isn't feeling good. She sits in the coop all day, eyes closed most of the time. We are in the middle of arctic cold temps here, so I'm sure that doesn't help! I came to this site to see if I could find answers to what might be going on and I started giving her corid once a day as well as putting it in the water. We started that Tuesday, on Saturday she seemed to be doing a lot better. She came out of the coop, was eating and drinking on her own. We didn't give her corid on Saturday (except what she got from the water) and on Sunday she was back to being in the coop all day, acting like she didn't feel good.

She doesn't have any drainage from her eyes or beak, she doesn't sound raspy or anything, I just don't know what else to do. Do I need to do the corid longer?

So is she just lethargic then? You said that you started giving treatment Tuesday, but when did it start?
Um... @aart @Eggcessive come check this out.
It started the weekend before. I'm fairly new to raising chickens and didn't have corid on hand (I actually had no idea what could be wrong until I started looking on here and decided I needed to get corid)

Lethargy seems to be the only thing I'm really noticing. I've scrambled up an egg and she eats that well.

I started giving her corid once a day as well as putting it in the water.
Please give details on Corid formulation and dosage.
What other symptoms of coccidiosis did you see other than lethargy?
Are any other birds acting off?

When I have a bird that is acting 'off' I isolate bird in a wire cage within the coop for a day or two....so I can closely monitor their intake of food and water, crop function(checking at night and in morning before providing more feed), and their poops. Feel their abdomen, from below vent to between legs, for squishy or hard swelling. Check for external parasites or any other abnormalities.

Best to put crate right in coop or run so bird is still 'with' the flock.
I like to use a fold-able wire dog crate (24"L x 18"W x 21"H) with smaller mesh(1x2) on bottom of crate under tray.
Then you can put tray underneath crate to better observe droppings without it being stepped in. If smaller mesh is carefully installed, tray can still be used inside crate.

Where are you and how cold?
Where in this world are you located?
Climate, and time of year, is almost always a factor.
Please add your general geographical location to your profile.
It's easy to do, and then it's always there!

This is the dosage of corid that I got off this forum.

Corid 20% powder - Mix 1/2 teaspoon powder with 2 teaspoons water.
  • Give 0.34 ml per pound of body weight orally once a day for 1-3 days.

I will check her abdomen and crop. The two other girls are fine, no problems with them at all.

Today's high is 14 with a brisk N wind.
I truly appreciate the suggestions. 🙂

I just went out and checked her. Abdomen seems fine, although I'm not sure what a "normal" one should feel like. Crop seems fine as well. We checked her and didn't see any mites but there does appear to be feathers around her neck area that look broken off.

How old is she? Pictures can help. Has she been laying eggs? Is her tail up or down in position? Feel of her crop early in the morning ans tell us if it is empty and flat, full, firm, doughy, or puffy. Look her over for mites or lice on her skin under her abdomen and under wings. Can you get her drinking some fluids? Electrolytes, gatorade, pedialyte, or Nutridrench is good to give her. If you continue Corid, do not give vitamins. Bits of cooked egg would be fine to offer her, and some like wet chicken feed.

She is 22 months old and hasn't been laying since feeling off.

I feel so stupid, after reading your response and looking it up, I realized I might be part of the problem! I was giving her poultry cell while giving her corid, thinking I was doing her a favor since she isn't eating much.

Should I continue giving her corid for a few more days?
