My pet chicken, a Leghorn, was sick… is sick? I don’t know anymore.
This morning, she was just standing in the downstairs part of the coop. Not moving. Unresponsive. I picked her up, checked on her, and she was lethargic, not hungry, didn’t really wanna move. She eventually hid under the porch for a while, and had a massive dump that was very wet and white/yellow. I was worried, so I kept checking on her, and she just laid down under the porch and didn’t come out.
Usually, when I call for her, she’ll come running and eats very enthusiastically. So I was worried, but she laid her egg on schedule, and I finally managed to coax her out with food. She’s been recovering, and is now enthusiastic about eating and is talking again (her normal friendly chirps), is drinking water, and her droppings have been returning to normal. However, now her wattle is swollen. Not too much, it’s just red, but obviously the first thing that popped up was chicken cholera and I’ve been concerned since. Tho, I wasn’t sure why that symptom wasn’t present initially, and she’s back to her old self.
So my dad and I figured it may be due to ant bites. We have fire ants we’ve been trying to run out the coop, and she got bit yesterday. My dad noticed a couple got on her, and she squawked when one bit her. She reportedly ate it afterwards. I was wondering if I should worry about cholera (there’s no other chickens she could’ve gotten it from, her coop mate is brooding and perfectly healthy and the others are passed away long ago). Or if it’s most likely just a bite? I would’ve just thought a bite, but this morning scared me.
Thanks in advance!
