Sick Chicken *update - chicken died*

Thank you for your help, but it was too late. After I made the homemade electrolyte recipe, I took it to the pen and the chicken was already dead. It went down hill really fast. I'm so sick at my stomach right now, I feel like I should have done more for this poor chicken.

I'm so upset about this I couldn't even pick it up and go bury it. I just cooped up the other 7 birds and left it lying there... my husband will be home in about an hour and he said that he would take care of it for me. I feel like such a big baby when it comes to stuff like that, my hubby always does the dirty work.

I noticed something else - there was some green mold on the feed that was on the ground in the pen. We have had alot of rain lately - I shoveled all that I could out of the pen.

Could that have killed the chicken? What would happen to a chicken if it ate moldy food?

PatchofHeaven...I'm so sorry for your loss. Don't put yourself down for not being able to bury it and your feelings....you're a woman and that's the way God made you!!

As for feeling guilty...I can give you all the platitudes but I'd probably feel guilty myself. However...you have to tell yourself you had the best intentions and only did what you know. Next time we all hope we know more and can do more.

As to the moldy food?? I honestly don't know...still learning myself...but I'd wonder about that being the cause if it were me. Hopefully some others will chime in with their experience and knowledge on this!

Take care, Jenifer

The mouldy food could have made her sick...
I'm sorry for your loss. She looks like my Slifer.

Sorry for your loss. It could have been the mold or it could have been something else since he (it is a boy by the tail, hackle, and sickle feathers) is the only one that was sick. Removing the moldypellets was a good idea though. Hope it was just a sole case. Keep an eye on the other though. When your husband takes care of him, have him check to see if his keel is sticking out as that could be a sign of him having worms leading him to not eat.

Okay - what is a keel? I looked at the anatomy of a chicken/rooster and did not see anything like that...Where is it located on the chicken?

The keel is the vertical bone in the front of the chest. On a healthy chicken, you should barely be able to feel it, but on a chicken that has been ill or not eating well, the keel will be more pronounced and sharp as a knife almost.
I'm sorry about your chicken. Sometimes they get sick and even the best vet can't figure out what the problem is, so don't beat yourself up. I once spent several hundred dollars at the best avian vet in Vermont, but he was stumped and we still lost the hen.
You could have a necropsy done on the bird if you really want to know.

Thanks ChickBea - I'll have my husband check that when he gets here.

What kind of symptoms would a sick bird have if it has eaten moldy food?

Is there anything (home remedy) to give the others if they start showing symptoms?
