Sick chicken with respiratory symptoms

Well unfortunately Ginger passed this morning. I just wish I knew what the underlying cause was so I can be more prepared the next time something similar happens. I checked her this morning and she still looked puffed up so I thought maybe it WAS impacted crop. Turned her over to check her vent and her neck just went limp. I guess maybe she was severely malnourished from the impacted crop and turning her over just did her in? Anyway, it's sad to see a chicken pass but I'm glad she isn't suffering any more. I just wish it was my demonic rooster that died instead of one of my sweet hens.

Labored breathing can mean a number of things, it doesn’t always mean a respiratory disease. Have you checked to see if she’s egg bound? Did an egg possibly break inside of her?
This may have been the problem. I have noticed several soft shelled eggs lately, so it is very likely that that was the cause. Have you ever had this with any of your chickens? Wondering if there is much you can do for them if it gets that bad...

Very sorry for your loss. You can do a home necropsy if you are comfortable attempting it, to try and find a cuase of her death. Professional necropsies are usually available through your state vet. If you do a necropsy, it can be helpful to take pictures of her abdominal contents and organs, such as liver, intestines, and look for yellow fluid or lash egg material in the abdomen. Then post them here for opinions. Here is a necropsy video that shows the organs labeled:

Yikes. Don’t know if I have the stomach for that! Lol but thanks for sharing!
