Hi all.. this is my first post here and was hoping you could help. I have a 6 months old paint silkie who is sick. She isn’t eating, is lethargic and is staying to herself. So I brought her in and checked for bugs and everything I could think of. The only thing I thought is maybe egg bound or an egg broke inside of her. I soaked her and blow dried her and while giving cuddles this (see pic) came out of her. Some has also leaked today. She has not actually pooped tho. Can someone please help?

My frist thought would be coccidiosis but i never heard of a older chickens getting it. It could be something as simple as stress. It's just could be so many thing if she is drinking try adding some electrolyte and vitamins supplement like save a chick.

Not as good as save a chick but if you have the stuff on hand. I love your paint silkie BTW

Homemade Electrolyte Recipe for Chicks

  • 1 cup warm water
  • 2 teaspoons molasses OR 2 teaspoons granulated sugar
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/8 teaspoon potassium chloride* (optional)

Thanks so much. I do have save a chick on hand but she isn’t eating or drinking. I might have to mix it and give her drops at a time. Also, my flock was just treated for cocci because there was blood is some stool. After treatment vitamins were given. I may have to travel to find a vet because she is one I definitely don’t want to lose. Thank you for your help! ❤️

She's not pooping?
Can you feel an egg just inside the vent?

If you just treated for coccidiosis maybe she was not fully cured for some reason. If you still have corid on hand I would dose her it won't hurt. I had a friend that had some chicken that just had white/yellow diarrhea with no blood. She had U.S.D.A. come out to test her chicken thinking it was something worse. But it was coccidiosis. But she lost 10 young chicken.

I never had an chicken get egg bound and I been breeding silkies for 6 years but I found this. Hope it helps.

When your hen is egg bound, your hen may appear weak, show no interest in moving or eating, have a “panting” respiratory rate, and may have some abdominal straining. One or both legs may appear lame due to the egg pressing on the nerves in the pelvis. In most cases, the egg is palpable in the abdomen and the cloacal region is often swollen.

Feces often appear to look like diarrhea due to the cloacal relaxation associated with egg laying. However, in some smaller breeds the birds may be constipated due to the egg interfering with normal defecation. All of these clinical signs can be reversed if the retained egg is passed.

Thank you. No pooping. No I cannot feel an egg. I thought i externally felt one but now I can’t feel it anymore which is why I think it broke. How far up the vent can I go? When I put a finger in, about half an inch in, it gets smaller. It seems to hurt her if I attempt to go past the smaller part. Do I need to push past that? Thanks for your response.

How is she doing? She is such a lovely looking silkie I hope she is doing better.
She is doing about the same. She actually pecked at some scratch when I took her outside today. Thank you for all of that information. She is still walking but has no interest in the others. I may need to give her a few drops of vitamin water. We have no avian vet but I am thinking of calling my vet to see if he has any recommendations. Or maybe he can at least do an X-ray and see. Thanks so much for your help and concern.
