I think my chicken , Butters has a prolapse. She isn’t doing well. Vets don’t take chickens; what do I do? Any help is welcome

Welcome to the site. Sorry to hear about your chicken. How bad is her prolapse? Are you able to post a picture?

Be sure to keep the tissue moist with something such as coconut oil or honey at all times, do not let it dry out. Get her started on 600 mg of calcium plus d3 per day. Keep her inside away from the other flock members so they don’t peck at the prolapse. If you’ve tried to push it back in and it won’t stay, it is too swollen, don’t try anymore than a few times. Eventually the tissue will reduce in size and swelling will subside and it will retract on its own. Here is a helpful article about prolapses. Follow the guidelines in this article and let us know how she does or if you have questions.

Here is a picture of my poor girl’s prolapse. Thank you for advice.

You’re welcome. She is wheezing? Oh gosh I’m not sure why she would be wheezing. Is she open mouth breathing? Be sure she has access to fresh water at all times, but also it may not be a bad idea to provide her with electrolyte water. It may help to soak her bottom in a warm Epsom salt bath, once or twice per day, also. That will help keep droppings off of her backside/tissues and could help with swelling. Could you get a photo with some of the feathers moved out of the way of her vent/prolapse tissue?

No her comb is floppy and she is wheezing… not open mouth. We gave her a warm bath and cleaned her up. She is in the laundry room… separated. The other girls were pecking her. She is the low man in the flock. Put on witch hazel and an antibiotic this morning. Husband going to get calcium now. Thanks for all the advice. She is a very sweet chicken; I don’t want her to be in pain.

Poor darling. I’m sorry to hear that she was getting pecked on. How is she doing today?@Eggcessive why could she be wheezing?

Could you upload a video of her wheezing to YouTube or something similar? Sometimes they can have stridor from getting a small piece of feed stuck in the airway, from dusty feed or eating too fast. Have you had any respiratory infection in your flock before, or have you added any new birds recently?
