Sick Chicken

Could you get a 1 cc syringe at Walgreens and give her drops of pedialyte and a slurry of food, like her feed and egg yolks and water and drop into her mouth a drop at a time, she will dehydrate.

My hen is dying she is lying lifeless I accidentally turned up upside down while transporting her from the tub to her pen and yellow clear stuff ran out of her nose and beak so now I think it's sour crop I turned her upside down as recommended in a forum I saw and some more came out but now she seems worse not moving at all and barley breathing I've tried getting water down her but it just runs out her mouth. I don't know what else to do any input appreciated her comb and everything is still purple

It's possible she aspirated some of her crop contents. I hope she makes it!

Purple comb is a sign that they aren't getting enough oxygen. I'm sorry you had to go through this... I know how difficult it is. Don't be hard on yourself, I think that she was already dying when you first noticed her purple comb.

Howdy, my near-neighbor twenty-some miles to my West ... sorry your Covie's havin' such troubles.

Not sure how much help I'll be on this, but it sounds to me like you've been doin' the best you can by her ...

First thing is to keep her warm. Our weather's gone from moderately dry 'n warm to unseasonably damp 'n cold is such a short time that it's a bit uncomfortable, and she's surely in pretty rough shape already.

You'd asked about forcing food/water, and I've heard some say that's not a good idea ... but, if she's dehydrating, and her only hope? I'd consider it. If you do? Be certain the eyedropper reaches beyond the hole at the base of her tongue, so as to not push anything into her lungs.

That reminds me ... >>peck here<< to see an interacting presentation of the anatomy of the chicken (move your mouse around each element for added information).

Although the comb turning purple can be the sysmptom of some diseases/infections, it's most probably a response to the stress her body is in.

At the bottom of my post, there's a link to help identify poultry diseases by the symptoms ... peck it, and begin runnin' down the list for anything that sounds familiar ... often, this helps folks spot symptoms they had previously not aware of, which helps to get to the cause, and any potential treatment.

Also, you need to keep a close eye on the rest. This could possibly be something that's gonna hit them as well. Try to always clean up and change shoes when you're headed towards your coop, so as to not potentially transfer what she may have.

I know I'm throwin' a lot at ya here, but it's sorta like how you felt ... when we don't know what's goin' on, we tend to do that.

One more thing you asked about .. here's the best article I've ever seen on egg binding, just in case.

Hope she gets better. And, feel free to PM me if you need somebody to dig through the 'net for further informations ~'-)

I am sorry you are going through this. We are new chicken owners as well... and recently lost 3 to cocci. We now know what to look for in case it happens again. All of the other girls got through it ok.

This is all a learning experience for us, and this site has been so helpful in finding answers :)

I want to thank everyone sincerely for trying so hard to help us, You have all given me a wealth of knowledge, and so many things to investigate, I had no idea so many things could happen to a poor little chicken. Covie died last night, I feel just terrible I should have known something was wrong with her earlier but I honestly just thought she was molting harder than the others. It just happened so fast. She was resting peacefully when I went to bed all warm and toasty I just think she was too weak to make it. I'm still unsure of exactly what happened, I guess it was sour crop maybe I'm not taking as good of care of them as I thought I was. I feed them laying pellets and chicken scratch (from the MiltonFarmHouse Hurricane neighbor:) ) mixed because they seem to love it so much, but I haven't been mixing grit in with it I have just been keeping it seperate in it's own little feeder. I do give them fresh veggies from my garden or I did until the garden seasons over. We give them fresh grass and clover, maybe we gave them too much grass. I just don't know:( I'm sure my family thinks I'm insane to be so upset, but I really love my chickens and hate to see anything suffer. I will definately investigate to try and figure out what was wrong with her to make sure my other girls don't suffer the same fate. Again Thank You my new chicken friends for all your thoughtful input and well wishes. I hope everyone has a good and safe day.

So sorry that Covie didn't make it - sometimes there is nothing we can do to help them get better - you have been very caring of her and she was comfortable indoors with you when she died.... not all chickens get that love and attention when they are ill.... she is at peace now.

Bless you

Suzie

Now I understand why a few of my chickens keep headin' towards the western side of the house when they get loose ... they're headed your direction, for the better accomodations you provide. And, if I were a chicken? I'd lead 'em there.

You're allowed this short period of wonderin' what mighta happened, if only [insert whatever different action or treatment you coulda/woulda/shoulda here]. And, as told another in regard to my feelin' for my animals ... if I can reach my own wounds, I'll stitch it myself, so as to avoid the inconvenience and the deductibles, but I'd drop five digits for my dog, if it was in his best interest to do so ... nothin' silly about it, at all. And, nothin' more to be done.

You'll apply all you've learned, and continue to be your flock's best defense against all those tiny things that keep tryin' to take 'em out ~'-)
