Hi I'm New to BYC - and this site looks like something I wish I had found years ago. Been raising chickens for a number of years and have had some great success and a lot of disappointments in losing chickens and never knowing why. I have a new concern with one of my RI reds that I've not seen before - her face on both sides have turned very red and swollen and I think I have another one that is starting to look like it's going to do the same - Does anyone know what might be going on?

Thank you for your reply - I don't see any kind of discharge or breathing problem what makes this strange - she eats fine and seem to act normal - no sneezing either.

I have a chicken that had a very swollen face as well. Not this bad, but similar. I determined it was a sinus infection and I treated it with antibiotics. Sulfadimethoxine may help. Possibly some Oxytetracycline. I used the Sulfa for 5 days and it cleared her swollen face up. She still gets these infections occasionally, but ever so slight and I have never had to repeat the meds.

You can also post this our emergency section her on BYC for more diagnosis....

Good luck with your baby.

Do I need to get this medicine from a vet or can you buy at farm store? We just purchased some tetracycline from the farm store - do you think that could work? One other thing that I see with this hen but with a couple of the other is white spots on their ear lopes( not sure if this is what these really are) - this is a better picture of one of my others showing these white spots almost like a mold?

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Sorry about your hen, X2 on posting in the Emergencies forum about her. You can buy those medications in most farm/feed type stores in the livestock section.

Tetracycline (same class as oxytetracycline) is listed in that link that I gave as treatment. You can start with that and if it doesn't work or they take a turn for the worse, Tylan from the farm store is another good option. But Sulfadimethoxine is better for Coryza. (I know, its confusing).

The white nodules don't look like fowl pox. I've heard of fungal infections like that.

This is very helpful thank you - I thought the white stuff look fungal too - just couldn't think of the word. The directions for the Tetracycline is only for large dosages of water or food - we don't have that many chickens - would you know what the mixing would be for just a couple gallons of water.

Thank you for the information - we will check it out.
