Yesterday we brought home our first chicks. 6 barred rock hens - they are super cute and fluffy and doing well. Except for one - she seems to spend most of her time laying around. Yesterday we called her sleepy girl and I thought maybe she were a little stressed from the trip home. But today she just lays there and the other chicks run around and frolic around her. What should I do? None of the other chicks are pecking at her and every once in a while she gets up and gets a drink or gets a little food but for the most part she lays around... please tell me I just have a lazy girl on my hand.

My girls LOVE these chicks (and I do too, in spite of my determination not to be!!!)

Thanks in advance for your help!

I had this happen a few days ago to one of our chicks. I hand fed her poly vi sol (without iron), a drop 2x's a day, pedialite and plain yogurt. The next day she was up and running around and wasn't sleeping the whole day. Plus, mine wasn't eating or drinking. Good luck!!

Good Grief! Thanks for the advice, glad to hear I might be able to do something... should I separate her from the others? Right now she is snuggled up next to one of her sisters...

I am certainly not an expert, but I've seen many posts here that have helped me. As for separating her from the others, I would say no unless they are picking on her. Start her on the vitamins and yogurt, bet she is much better in 24 hours. IF they start to peck at her, you might want to put her in another small brooder, keep her warm (95 degrees) and watch over her. Some have said they even put a small stuffed animal in for their babies to cuddle with.
I hope this helps and the best of luck with your new babies.

Thanks so much for the quick answers (and the welcome).

I'm loading up the kids and heading to town for some vitamins, yogurt and pedialyte... hope my little girl makes it.

Ive got the same problem with my Americaunas. Someone suggested starting them on antibiotics, but now Im not sure that was the right course of action. I just started, should I quit and switch to the yogurt vitamin plan? By the way, how much pedialyte with the yogurt? and how do you feed her? with a dropper or do you encourage her to eat it on her own?
Thanks!!

Thanks for sharing. Im so sorry for your loss. I will keep working on it, but try to prepare myself for the worst as well .

I just saw this post...and I'm sooooo sorry she didn't make it. That's so sad.

My suggestion would be to check her bottom for pasty-butt. I had an Easter Egger act like that. I picked her up and my son said "Ewww, she has poop on her". I didn't even notice, but he was right...there was a plug of poop that was backing her up. I soaked her bottom with warm water and removed the "plug" and she let out a huge poop on my hand. Yuck! I was never so happy to be pooped on...LOL. She was fine after that.

I know it's too late for you, but maybe that info will help someone else.
