Ok so one of my chickens had chicks about 6-7 weeks ago. A few days ago we stuck them in with 4 chicks about a half a month older then them.. (mom's idea) Well at first it looked like it was going to work, except for every now and then one of the older ones would peck a chick. (just enough to move the chick out of its way.) Well today my mom went out to check/feed the chicks and found that the some what bigger chicks had trapped 3 of the smaller one under their nest box. We removed the bigger chicks and freed the smaller ones. All but one of the chick are fine. I'm not sure what's wrong with Cheeper. Cheeper can't stand, is very tired and spit up liquid (not a lot and it stopped after.) Cheeper is a tad cold, and quiet. I think he/she might be dehydrated and exhausted due to stress caused by the bigger chicks.

I have Cheeper under a light to try and warm him/her up a little. Cheeper is still drinking a little water but not much. Is their any advice you can give me/ or something else I can do to help Cheeper? Really worried about him/her. Ty for any help. And Please don't be mean I'm still learning and won't make the same mistake twice. -Storm

UPDATE:
Could he be anemic? I just found a few mites, and fleas have been bad this year so far..
He is now having what looks to be
seizures. Could the reason the other birds turned on him was they saw he was gitting sick?

UPDATE: Time is 5:25 am. I have been up all night with cheeper, he never really woke up after the first seizure. At 5: 15am he died. I need to know what may have caused it. I fear now for the rest of my flock.
He started spitting up liquid again only this time is was a brownish/ redish (I think because i'm half color blind) It smelled so bad I was sick.. Sour, Vial smelling. Any ideas?

I am sorry for the loss of Cheepers. It may have been damage caused by the older birds that caused this, but this sounds as if it were a crop issue.

You also need to address the mite problem ASAP. Sevin dust will work. Clean the coop throughly, as in everything washed and dried, all litter removed, nesting boxes emptied and cleaned as well. I have used a Sevin spray you can find at WalMart, Tractor Supply, etc., I use this to spray the corners, the roost and the insides of the nesting boxes. Let this dry completely before the nesting material is put into the nesting boxes. Once everything is dry you can add new shavings, or whatever you use and sprinkle that with Sevin dust, not the Sevin spray. Now the birds....the best time to get them is at night when they are on their roost. Each one needs to be dusted with the Sevin dust to kill the mites on them. some people take a pillow case and put the Sevin dust into that, add a chicken, with it's head sticking out the top, while you hole the bag closed around it's neck, GENTLY hold it closed, and then just kind of shake the stuff around so the bird is completely covered with the stuff. Talk abaout breading chicken, lol, same idea, but you don't want the head inside breathing the dust. You will need to do this again in 5-7 days, to get any eggs that may hav hatched.

Just some advice about adding birds to older ones. Birds have a flock, doesn't matter if it's only 2 birds, it's a flock. In the flock, they have a pecking order, kinda like high school cliques, the strongest are at the top and fought to get there and the bottom bird is well, the least popular, not always the weakest. Anyways...they have the flock dynamics in place and all of a sudden, a bunch of new birds are added. Not cool! These birds should have had a dog crate or a pen in with the older birds, so they could see each other for a couple of weeks or more, before they were thrown into the mix. Didn't happen so now you have pretty much a gang war going on. Unless the younger ones are seperated from the older ones and allowed to be seen for a while, this will continue and Cheepers may not be the only victim in their turf war.

TY for the information you have given me. The older chick have been moved to another pen. All the other chicks are fine and I will dust them tonight. I see what you mean and will not do the same again the next time we have new chicks. I feel really bad for Cheeper but from what I have learned from this, I will make sure it never happens again. TY for the advice on how to dust them, and it is funny how much it sounds like a shake n' bake. Is there a way to prevent crop problems?

From what you described it sounds to me as if this little one was beat on pretty good. It could have been from that or indirectly from that. If the babies were being kept from the feeder, when they got a chance to get there they would have stuffed themselves. This isn't a good thing and can cause the crop to become compacted quite easily. There could be a lot of reasons and it is a tough lesson to learn. As you said though, you will never forget it.

Again, I am so very sorry this happened to you. We all make mistakes when we first start. If this is the only thing that goes wrong for you then I'd say you've done really good. Don't beat yourself up over this, seriously, we all do it at first.
