Hello, one of my four babies is under the weather
She has improved since I noticed but just wanted to run it by you lot and see what you think...She was not as active and has been fluffed up and sleepy with decreased appetite approx 18-24hrs. Loose droppings, white/watery with some solid green. This was overnight on March 30.
I contacted the vet, I thought coccidiosis, based on listlessness, neck pulled in and fluffed up, plus sleeping excessively. He prescribed sulphaQ drugs for only her and suggested not medicating the others.
I also have amprol from another source and could treat them all but the rest are healthy and show no signs of illness.
I did initiate vitamins in their water and over the last 24 hours she had been eating and drinking more, not as sleepy, but also not very active. They had scrambled eggs around lunch for extra protein. She does seem better and I have not initiated antibiotics bc I don’t want to treat if not necessary but I also don’t want to lose a baby.
Her droppings are also more normal, just had a couple watery loose ones and have been more normal since although less then normal but I would attribute this to decrease in appetite and drinking.
What would you suggest? Any of you have issues similar before? How would you proceed? Isolate/keep them together? Treat/not?
I have read so much information and have varying opinions from multiple well meaning sources but so much is troubleshooting with chickens as the presentation for illness can be similar/the same as so many other illnesses and so much info to shift through.
I have kept them inside, good brooder management, clean water twice daily and dump and bedding when noticed.
Nobody else has exhibited signs of illness or change in behaviour. Only 2-3 loose droppings and now normalized. She had grapes the day she started exhibiting symptoms, wasn’t the first time she had them but maybe upset her digestive system.
I appreciate any insight/advice. I’m struggling with knowing if I’m making the right choices. I have numerous chicken text books and Gail Damerow’s books but also not super helpful. Vet did not want to do fecal float at the time but thought better to treat, but idk! TIA!
I love them all
