Not sure anyone can help much but, here it goes... our comet hen Ginger wasn't acting normal. We found her hunched up in the coop and she only came out of the coop to get a drink, so we brought her inside. We soaked her bum, incase she was egg bound and did an internal check-no egg. Then we checked for impacted crop-nice and soft.

We're keeping her in the house tonight ... any ideas?

Hi. Try to answer these questions first, best you can, so you can get the most help possible. Good luck with your hen.

1) What type of bird , age and weight.
2) What is the behavior, exactly.
3) How long has the bird been exhibiting symptoms?
4) Are other birds exhibiting the same symptoms?
5) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma.
6) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation.
7) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all.
8) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc.
9) What has been the treatment you have administered so far?
10 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet?
11) If you have a picture of the wound or condition, please post it. It may help.
12) Describe the housing/bedding in use

Comet-hen 2 years.
Keeping to herself, hunched up.
1-2 days.
No other birds affected, no trauma, haven't seen her poop today.
She is drinking-so we added some antibiotics to it(incase).
Wood shavings.

Other than that-see the first post...

You said she doesn't feel egg bound, but does her belly feel swollen at all? Also, does she have any yellowish type poo around her vent? How's her comb color?

I really not good with the various chicken illnesses, just trying to help you until more qualified help comes along.

I wonder about egg peritonitis. I have a hen with that right now.

Best we can tell, no-nice soft belly and crop. Her vent was clean(for her), she always has a little crusty poo on her since we got her last year. Her comb "may" be a little pale, but nothing that jumps out at you. She layed yesterday, no problem. When we felt IN her vent, there was nothing...it was nice, smooth and clean.

So far, no poop. Nothing coming from her bum either. Ate a handful of lettuce and is drinking, but looks sick.

She is still drinking the antibiotic water and is looking better. She coughed up mucus when I held her and we rechecked her vent and we felt an egg in her stomach(did not lay today). She ate some cheese, a little calcium ,some bread with oil and some lettuce.

All better. Don't know how, but she is

We put her back out with her flock and she's totally normal.

I've heard a lot about people giving thier chickens pepper to deworm them. Maybe she needs some?
