I noticed one of my girls was dirty so I picked her up and saw her bill was pale and had spots on it. One of her nares is dark and has drainage. Anyone know what this is?

does she have a bucket or something simular that she can put her head in to wash out her eyes and nares? I looked in my Raising Ducks book and the only thing I saw was sinus infection and CRD, which both need to be treated with an antibiotic and Tylan is the drug of choice. has anything changed at home that would cause her to be stressed, change of diet, moving to new pen, adding more ducks? how old is she and how many ducks do you have?do you notice any swelling around her eyes?

Nothing new going on. She is with a drake and two other ducks. She is 1 year old, and she does have a pond which we change daily. I didn't notice any swelling around her eyes. Her bill also seems to be slightly wrinkled. I also noticed while we were checking her over she was just slightly prolapsed. She is an excellant layer and has laid today. I have penecillin tablets so I started her on it tonight. Just wanted to make sure this wasn't a fungus or something. Her behavior is normal and she is eating and drinking so I hope we caught this early!

Pale bill and spots on the bill have to do with laying / hormones and age. Unless there are other symptoms- her beak looks normal. The wrinkling can be caused by mild dehydration. It might be wise to give her a break from the drake for a few days so that he isnt trying to mate with her and further upset the prolapse. Not sure if limiting the daylight hours would work to stop her laying for a while too- but it could be worth a try. My runners lay year round- the lesser daylight hours in winter do slow them down some- but I havent had a day go past that I havent had at least one eggs from them.

Drainage was clear. Put her on penicillan tablets. She seems to be doing better. Eating, Drinking, great energy but still really dirty. No more drainage though.
