I have a 9 month old Production Red rooster and he has gotten frost bite on his comb and wattles. When I was checking up on him, I noticed mucus coming out of him mouth and nose. I brought him into a heated garage and his wattles and chin area started to swell a lot. I couldn't notice any symptoms with the other hens in the run, and the other rooster seems to be okay as well.

The temperature outside has been around 0ºF, and the temperature in the garage is about 40-45ºF.

If you guys know what might be wrong with him, please let me know. He is currently isolated from the flock, and he has clean water, food, and is in a small but clean cage.

In the wintertime I put a coating of vaseline on my roosters comb and wattles. Keeps them from frostbite. Im not sure whats causing the swelling. Have you called a vet? May be he will need some antibiotics for the discharge.

Once the frostbite starts to thaw, I'm guess this is what's happening since you moved him into the warm garage, it can certainly swell. The cells are damaged in the comb and wattles, cell walls rupture as well as blood vessels so things no longer circulate properly and fluids gather and pool and swelling happens. Before you brought him in the comb and wattles were likely mostly frozen, but now that they are warm they are filling with fluid. Many chickens survive frostbite quite well, you just need to keep an eye out for infection.

I'm not sure about the mucus coming out of the mouth and nose :idunno I don't know if this could somehow be related to the frostbite or is similar to a reaction that happen with people, ever notice how when you come in from the cold your nose starts to run? Or if it's something else entirely. Hopefully you get some answers so you can care for your lil guy.
