Sick hen - any advice appreciated

Well, she's still alive. I honestly didn't expect her to last through the night. She maybe even seemed slightly improved - eyes were fully open & she didn't seem to be stretching as far when gasping. I went to the grain store and got some Terra-Vet antibiotics (sorry, but Tylan ran at $70!). I'm mixing with probiotics & electrolytes & syringe feeding to her. Also got some Vet RX. Hoping that will help. I also have baby food and am thinking about syringe feeding that if she goes much longer.

Mud butt - dirty pooped on feathers around her butt. She's still pooping, but boy does she stink! Almost like an amonia-type smell. Any thoughts on that?

Ok, so those lovely pics definitely look like her butt, but is that likely to cause her other issues (esp. the gasping for breath)? Sounds like at this point I don't have much to lose, so I may try bathing/soaking her. She's putting up a good fight that's for sure.

Update - I just gave her some apple & banana baby food using a syringe, and she seemed quite interested. She seems like she may have perked up a little, although she's still gasping and wheezing. I'm feeling a little more hopeful than I did last night.

when my sick chickens that I keep inside get nasty butts, I just rinse the area under the kitchen faucet and work the poo out. Tylan should only be about 14$ at TSC. Tylan 50, that is, I just got some.

Tylan 50 injectable should only cost $12-14 at most feed stores, and can be used orally straight as well as by injection.. Large jars of Tylan Soluble Powder are pretty expensive, but some stores sell smaller jars. Has your chicken had any blood-tinged mucus from the nose? Thanks again for the responses. No mucus. I just picked her up to bathe her and she pooped - pretty runny and dark colored (but doesn't look bloody) with bits of white through it. I soaked her in an Epsom Salts bath for 15 mins and then tried to clean her up. Cut some feathers around. Her vent is pulsating slowly but no idea if that's normal. She's pretty red under her vent, but her vent and surrounding area looks pretty good to me (but again, I have no clue what's "normal"). She's still gasping, but has some fight in her. I'm keeping her up with the antibiotic/electrolyte/probiotic mix. Here's a photo (sorry I don't have better pics...the photographer was a very reluctant 7yo ):

The redness and bare patches look like vent gleet, a fungal infection. Most antifungal creams will work--Mycostatin, Tinactin, Lotrimin, or sulfur-based Nustock from the feed store. The probiotics should help. Look over the disease link to read about all of the ones that cause gasping. Gapeworm, although rare, causes her symptoms as well.

Thanks again. I checked out the link you gave, but none seemed an exact match. Seems like I may be fighting two separate things here.

I'm starting to think gapeworm. I actually threw a large earthworm to them about 9 days ago and she's dominant, so I'm figuring she got it, although I couldn't tell when I threw it. I'm in San Diego if that makes a difference. She's wheezing both on inhale and exhale. Advice on gapes?
