Six weeks ago (Feb 4) I noticed one of my hens (Inara) was sick so I isolated her. She was very lethargic (not moving around at all) not eating, mushy crop that didn’t empty overnight. Yellowy mucousy diarrhea with darker bits in it. Vet found coccidia in the poop, but it was already too late for my hen; she didn’t make it.
I treated the rest of my flock with Corid (the 20% powder) 1 teaspoon powder per two gallons of water for five days. I waited 13-14 days then re treated for a further five days.
Saturday I noticed another one of my hens (Melanie) is not doing well; lethargic (though not as much) with decreased appetite so I isolated her late Saturday. She also has diarrhea; mucousy though not as thick. It’s yellow, whiteish and tan with darker bits in it sometimes. Her appetite and thirst have decreased to next to nothing though water and food are available to her at all times. We’re giving her water medicated with Corid (same dose) but don’t hardly see her drinking at all so we’ve been giving some to her with a syringe several times a day. Her crop felt the same Sunday morning as it did Saturday night but emptied as best I can tell during the day Sunday. She was willing to eat a little plain scrambled egg but has started refusing that. She did take some of the fresh bread I offered. Diarrhea hasn’t improved, though perhaps gotten a bit thicker since the diarrhea of Saturday night.
Could she have coccidiosis too? I took a sample to the vet that she said was clean, but it wasn’t a sample from Melanie.
Any other ideas of what could be wrong and what I could do to help her? I noticed that her comb has started to turn dusky/blue tinged sometimes.
Any ideas and info are very much appreciated!
