Sick hen- head down- not eating

Hi BYC friends,
We have a 4.5 yr old sick Polish. This past Saturday, she became unable to hold her head up or do much movement. Head is down, tail is down. She’s not eating or drinking. We’ve been treating for wry neck (vitamin e, b, and selenium), giving antibiotics for 3 days. We’re giving her water and small amounts of yogurt by a syringe. Any ideas if she can pull through this? Appreciate all the support.

We’re doing 400 mg vitamin e and 1/2 pill vitamin b complex per day (plus 25 mg selenium). So some thiamine from the b-complex. Should we try more?

Cut out that Selenium that's Way too much!

Give her a bit of egg which will have plenty of Selenium.

Work on hydration and offer her wet mushy feed, if she's unable to eat/drink on her own, tube or syringe fluids/food into her. What antibiotic are you giving?



fwiw = maximum daily dose of Selenium is 25mcg (Micrograms), not mg. If given too much over a short period of time, there's a risk of toxicity.

That's should be sufficient, it can be awhile before there's Improvement

Apologies for the mis-type. The dosage has been 25 mcg on the selenium. We are currently giving Norfenicol as it has worked wonders in the past for our flock.

We will continue working on the hydration…currently having to use a syringe.
