I have a Golden Comet about 4 1/2 years old, I noticed about a 4 days ago that she was hanging out in the nesting box during the day. Every time I checked she was in the nesting box that day. The next day she was out of the nest but couldn’t walk and the other hens were pecking her, so I removed her from the pen and put her in a crate in my basement because it has been hot here in Alabama. Her waddles were very pale and when I gave her water she drank for a long while and has eaten very well. She is now able to stand a walk but her waddles are still pale, I’m not sure I want to put her back in the pen because she has been bullied in the past but I do know hens will peck sick hens. My question: do you think that she seems to be recovering and that she was just being bullied and was hiding and not drinking and eating, should I pen her alone (I have a smaller pen that is only used for chicks), how long will it take for waddles to appear red?

I think you should put her in a dog crate next to the run of the coop so the other hens can see her, and put her in the coop at night. She needs to be with the other chickens, they are very social animals. give her scrambled eggs and broccoli in her food, too.

Thank you! I am afraid that it would be far too hot in the crate! And, my birds are a murderous bunch, and she is defenseless. I wonder, though, whether an older chick or two would be enough company? I could bring them in, to be with her inside. It's just so blasted hot out!
