Sick hen or old age?

Thanks for the info. My vet called back and got a lot of information. He wants to see her in the morning. My vet is good about keeping the cost down and being out in the country, he is well versed in livestock and poultry care as well as cats and dogs. He has a small ranch himself. Anyway, since she is not eating the scrambled eggs, he suggested a drop or two of Caro syrup several times tonight to help keep her energy up. I believe he is leaning toward a parasite, which falls right in line with your NFM theory. The bug you described is what I thought I saw under her wings. We will see.

I just hope she hangs on through the night.

Awesome! We don't have anyone that will see our birds. So great you have a good resource local. Let us know please,we're always learning even after many years of poultry husbandry! Good luck!

Well, Chickensaresweet, you nailed it. NFM. I woke up this morning and Freckles was a little more responsive, but not enough to get hopes up. In her cage were hundreds of dead bugs. I took her to my vet and he examined the bugs under his microscope. NFM without a doubt. He did a fecal on her and came up negative. He gave me his cell and wants me to call back tonight around 9:00 in case something comes up later in the fecal. He gave me Ivermectin and another medicine to give her for 3 days(I don't remember the name and it doesn't say on the receipt). If her fecal comes back positive he will give her yet something else to take, most likely a wormer. He also gave me enough to give my entire flock in case I see symptoms. Other than that I have to dust her again along with the rest of the flock. Along with another dusting, this should take care of the mites as long as I continue to dust the coop and the run.

Thanks guys for the help. I wish I didn't have to resort to the vet, but it was just 2 hours of my time and $11 for the treatment.

You are welcome!

I am so glad that you have been able to see a vet and determine the cause of her illness. He sounds like a wonderful vet!

Hopefully your hen will get better soon!

I'm so sorry for your loss.

I had a hen who started moving more slow last year. She stopped roosting and would just lay around. Turns out she had ovarian cancer. She was three years old. We lost her just past her 3 year Bday so they do get all kinds of things that are not immediately obvious to diagnose.

Let's hope that what ever she had was not contagious and that the rest of your flock lives a long, and happy life.

Oh, so sorry. You know I ran your story past a chicken friend of mine and we were discussing ovarian cancer. So ironic you mentioned that. Hope everyone else turns out ok . Thank you for keeping us posted
