I have a young hen, 7 months old, that began sneezing and rattling a few weeks ago. I quarantined her and she seemed better after a week so I returned her to the flock thinking maybe it was allergies. After 2 days she was stick again. Quarantined her again for two weeks. She still sneezed occasionally but wasn’t congested so returned to flock. Now she seems worse. Strange thing is she is eating, not as much though, and comb and wattles are as red as ever. She behaves like she feels great. We had introduced DE right before she started all this. Put it in there dust bath and roosts. I had linked it all to that but now I have 2 more sneezing. Ughhhh oh and she now sounds like a goose? Any ideas and what is safe to treat her with? We gave her a few doses of penicillin but honestly don’t know if we gave enough doses. Im still new to chickens and very new to ill ones. Ps my vet doesn’t see chickens.... go figure This is her taken an hour ago

Welcome To BYC!

Can you take a video of what she sounds like? Upload it to youtube and provide a link.
Have you noticed any mucous, facial swelling, watery or bubbly eyes?

How much ventilation do you have in your coop? You mention that this started after you put DE (under?) the roosts? Is there a way to take that out of the coop?

IF she doesn't have any other symptoms besides an occasional sneeze, then I would not treat with antibiotics. See if it worsens, stays the same or gets better.
She's eating/drinking and behaving like she feels great, so I would suggest just keeping a watch on her at this time.
Honking like a goose, I would like to hear that if possible...often a pullet is getting their "big girl" voice and can sound goose-like.

Environment can cause some respiratory symptoms - poor ventilation, ammonia and molds are a few. There are respiratory diseases that chickens can have as well. Depending on the disease, antibiotics may be needed to treat the symptoms. Infectious Bronchitis and ILT are both viruses, so antibiotics won't help unless there's secondary infection. Mycoplasma (MG) is bacteria-like, it has no cell wall, so Penicillin would not be an effective treatment. Tylosin, Tiamulin and Tetracyclines would be broad spectrum antibiotics used to treat MG. Infectious Coryza is also bacterial, but responds better to Sulfa antibiotics, but often another broad spectrum antibiotic like Tylosin is used during treatment as well.
