My Coop
My Coop
We went out to the coop this morning to do feeding and noticed one of the hens wasn't doing so well. She was laying down and not getting up to walk or move. Everyone was fine until yesterday evening and when my son checked on the chickens and put them in their coop for the night last night he noticed that she seemed really sleepy and not her usual self. This morning she feels very limp and isn't really moving. We separated her from the other chickens and put her in a cat carrier with her own food and water and some hard boiled egg. She is eating well now but seems to be dozing off a lot.

Her comb is bright red which seems normal.
She can stand but doesn't do it often.
She is drinking and eating. We gave her chick starter mash and water and another dish of hard boiled egg smashed up.
She was eating standard layer pellets with free choice water in the coop.
All my chickens are out from dawn until dark free ranging throughout the yard which is fenced in to keep the neighbors animals out.

Any thoughts what it might be?

No other chickens are showing any signs of illness. This seemed to hit pretty suddenly. Any ideas of where to start would be appreciated.

**edited because I forgot to say she is a Gold Comet and she is just a little over a year old. Was a year the end of April.

No lice or mites I have treated both the chickens and the coop as a preventative even though I have never seen a mite or lice on any of the chickens. Her belly does feel a bit fat so I am worried she might be egg bound. Is there anything I can do for her if she is?

Try soaking her in a container of warm water up to her sides and gently massage her underside while she's soaking for about 20 minutes. Then put on a disposable glove and put olive oil on a finger and insert it into her vent checking for debris. Then remove your finger and put olive oil just inside and outside of her vent. The warm water will expand her innards, massaging will help move the egg along. Finger in the vent stretches it and the olive oil will make it easier for her to lay the egg. Hopefully she'll lay an egg if that's what the problem is. You might have to repeat soaking in warm water on occasion until she lays the egg.

Thanks I will try that and let you know how it goes

**update** so far no change. She is sleeping in a cat kennel in the house because even though I dried her off I was worried she would get a chill if I put her outside in the kennel and in case it's catching I didn't want to put her in the coop. She really seemed to like the bath and closed her eyes and floated in the warm water for a while. I then oiled in and outside her vent which she didn't like so now we are just waiting. She seems to be just sitting and sleeping right now. No other change. I hope she feels better soon :(

She seems to be doing worse rather than better. Now she seems unresponsive. She is not eating or drinking and when my son picked her up to check on her she had a very runny poo come out all of a sudden. Hoping she is okay but preparing for the worst because she seems to be getting worse not better.
