My favorite hen got very sick with Ascites last weekend, but I was able to treat and save her. Thank you BYC!
She bounced back quickly and was back out with her friends two days later. She's been eating, drinking and eating grit, but today I noticed the undigested grain in her poop. She walks around like she's been drinking and has poor balance. She sat in my lap for awhile and was cooing as I petted her. I just gave her some Poly-vi Sol, no iron. No feed stores nearby. I haven't found worms or mites, but her belly was gurgling a lot when I was holding her. No injuries.
I appreciate any ideas.
Thank you!

I'm sorry she isn't feeling well.

How did you treat the ascites?
I had to use a catheter needle to drain the fluid. She had about 2 cups by the time I finally figured out what was wrong. She's been through a lot in just a week. Maybe she just needs the vitamins and rest? It didn't help that we got snow a again this weekend.

I hate to say this but I don't believe that ascites ever fully goes away. I think the draining just gives them temporarily relief. Something is causing that which is also causing the rest of the problems. There might not be anything you can do to make her fully recover.

Is a vet an option?

That's my understanding too :(. I am just hoping for a little more time. I'm going to speak with a vet/friend, but they do not treat chickens, so I'm kinda on my own.

Oh Undigested Grain In poop have Three reasons
1 is Heat
2 is Liver Didn't Producing Enzymes
3 is Clostridium Pref.

In 1st Heat makes the digestive system works quick as bird drink alot and food didn't get chance to digest
In this case you should give all easy to digest food

In 2nd Liver didn't producing digestive enzymes which happen due to prolonged heavy Antibiotic course
In this case 1 ml Yeast in 1 litter water for 3-4 days or Else you can buy a liver Tonic and give for 7 days in a row

In 3rd Clostridium Pref . cause necrotic entertits which also cause grains in poop treatment is Baytril , Sulfadiazine , Sulmet Or Neomycin foe 5-7 days

Definitely not heat, still snowing here. Due to ascites I bekieve she's having liver failure. I'll try the yeast and when she quits enjoying life I'll do the right thing. ☹️
Thank you.
