Hi everyone,
i am having some trouble identifying my hens illness. She is eight years old and is a new hampshire.
her symptoms are;
- white diarrhea poops with occasional green (bile). I had a sick hen with ascites who laid similar poops and it Had a distinct smell which is the same smell coming from this one.
- her crop is a little hard, the size of a golf ball, and i kept her in this morning and her crop didnt move or digest at all.
- she has always had a fat butt, her abdomen hangs low but doesn’t go out sideways. I have had quite a few ascites chickens and her butt is not liquid, more so it feels like fat.
- about a week ago she stopped laying her shell less eggs (explained in the bottom section)
- she still eats a bit but i am currently treating for impacted crop so she is inside.
what she has had
- about a year ago she had what I believed to be vent gleet. I gave her epsom salt baths and things for it and it finally stopped.
- about six months ago she started laying eggs at night. She would always have them every other night or sometimes longer, she never would lay regularly.
- these eggs were just the yoke and albumen and after a bit she would squeeze out the shell (shell was very loose and rubbery... not a normal shell)
- her egg laying at night gradually went later and later into the night and no amount of calcium helped her.
- i suspected she could have fatty liver from corn or just was fat so i stopped giving treats and things but now she is loosing weight in other areas (not her abdomen) because she isn’t eating due to her illness.
My best guesses could be : she is having a relapse of vent gleet and its causing her crop and other things not to function
- she has some internal problem causing her crop not to move at all and for her to poop out urates and bile.
- i dont suspect impacted crop because her crop Was only the size of a golf ball and after some coconut oil i got it break up, still hasn’t pooped anything out yet.
- she hasn’t laid an egg in a week so i was thinking about her having an infection so every day i have been giving a 250 mg of amox and then later in the day she gets calcium.
I hope someone can help identify this!
