I posted a problem with a hen the other day ... let me add some more information and concerns ... this five month old hen, breed unknown altho I suspect she is a Black Jersey Giant, has been making an odd sound. She sounds as if she is being strangled and when she inhales afterwards you can hear a wet gurgle. She does not do this all of the time, worse when the days are hotter and humid. The other chickens in the flock are not exhibiting these symptoms and/or behavior. She is eating, drinking and has started to lay eggs. I am concerned as well if we should even be eating her eggs. Prior to this, she was also lame in one leg, altho that has almost completely resolved. We are debating on whether or not to dispose of her ... my main concern is that she has something contagious which could go through the rest of my chickens. She was purchased from a reputable breeder along with my Black Copper Maran hens. They were fed medicated chick feed and are now on lay maker. They have a nice hen house at night and are then out in a large airy chicken yard until dark. Fresh water and grain daily. Her eyes are clear, no nasal discharge. Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.
