Hello all,

In April of this year I purchased a batch of mixed heritage breed chicks from a commercial hatchery (making them 33 weeks now). All except one roo were sent to the freezer and I kept the hens. I have had five birds die of what seems to be the same illness and one more is now exhibiting the same symptoms. This is over the last five months. Chicken starts out very lethargic, eyes half closed. No discharge from eyes or nose. Her poop looks normal but one that passed before had super runny poop. (White and watery then yellow water) Over a week or so the symptoms get worse. They have a terrible time balancing and can not walk well. A couple ended up with either a paralyzed wing or leg. All ate and drank well right up to their demise. The hen in question at the moment seems to be hanging on the longest. She is a bantam dark Brahma. The others that passed included two brown leghorns, a buff orphington and two buff brahmas. The vet has said to bring this one in for an autopsy if she doesn’t make it. All of my other birds seem great. Still laying, very active, eating and drinking well. They are housed in a 6x8 coop with straw and pine shavings on the floor and have access to over 50square feet of outdoor run. I clean the coop every three days (I have a cloth under their roost to collect droppings) and spread new straw out on the floor. (Complete clean now is not possible as it’s -20 celsius or colder at night) I feed them a commercial layer ration and veggie scraps. They get warm oatmeal, cooked beans and pumpkin seeds sometimes. Please let me know what your thoughts are and how to prevent/cure if possible. Thank you :)

Greetings Adirehs,

Welcome to BYC!

I agree with puffypoo22. It may very well be Marek's disease. This has been a progressing illness in your flock.

But, don't get discouraged...Marek's disease, like cancer in people, has fatalities but also survivors!

As with all injuries and illnesses, you should put the chicken into a hospital crate, box or laundry basket, with some type of bedding, paper, washable mat, or towel. Keep her comfortable, out of cold and drafts. Offer normal layer feed and water daily. Also, fresh greens, diced fruits, diced meats, cooked eggs, cooked grains. Fresh daily, Aloe Vera or Echinacea tea in the water will boost her immune system. Give grit if needed.

There is no cure for Marek's, but good supportive care can make a difference, whether a chicken survives or not.

The following treatments are reported to be extremely helpful:
Turmeric
Vitamin B ("Super B") Complex, Nutritional Yeast (check label to be sure of high vitamin B-12/Thiamin percentages!),
Cold-pressed Coconut oil (medium-chain fats help vitamin absorption in general),
Cranberry, specifically high quality whole berry (can be chopped, mashed, or cooked into a sauce) or no-sugar sauces/juices in a pinch

The only way to know for sure if it is Marek's, is to have a necropsy done on a chicken that dies.

At that point you can decide what to do for the other chickens. To cull, or not to cull? That will be up to you. Educate yourself first, before making that decision.

Here is the link to the article "The Great Big Giant Marek's Disease FAQ", where I learned about these treatments. It's one of the best articles I have read on Marek's, so far. It is long, because it is thorough.

Because the chickens are active, eating, drinking and laying, I cannot think of any other illnesses that present with the symptoms you describe, except for poisoning. So, do check the run and any foraging areas for chemicals contaminants, dead animals or birds, cigarettes, etc.

The only other deadly condition is "Hardware Disease".
This is so serious, and can be misdiagnosed, because people never think a chicken could swallow a long screw! But, they do...and nails, staples, shards of glass, metal shavings, etc.

Symptoms are:

  • No symptoms, sudden death
  • Decreased appetite
  • Lethargy
  • Weightloss
I always have to remind my hubby, to clean up, after working on his projects. I will even run, a big magnet on wheels, around the property to pick up and metal objects. And, glass shards I never saw so many broken glass, since we moved to this property 18 years ago.

Well, these are my extended thoughts on your chicken issue.
I hope they are of some use.

God Bless and protect, you and your flock! :hugs

Thanks so much! I’m hoping for the best! She happens to be one of my faves

Adirehs, again...welcome!
You are not alone, the members of BYC are here for you when ever you are in need.

Don't worry too much, raising chickens has it's moments, when your nerves get so frazzled. And at the same time, they are so funny and beautiful, too. We open our hearts to them, and care for them with love. Because of this, it is painful to see them suffer. But, no matter what becomes of the little hen, one thing is for sure. She is loved!

:thumbsup
God Bless!

i was wondering about that before but their stool looks normal. No blood or extra shed intestinal lining.
