Sick hen

I have a hen that is throwing up kinda greenish stuff. Once it looked like runny poop with white stuff. Crop doesn't feel packed. Drinking lots and doesn't seem to be eating. What could be wrong ?

How old is your hen? Has she had any trouble laying eggs lately?

I have had her a little over 2 years. Not sure how long the neighbor had her before giving her to me. She was laying every day and seemed fine until we had a big storm.

Greetings Mylittlefarmof12,
Yes, it is lice. You'll need to treat the flock. It may be time to clean out, wash down, and treat the coop, as well.

Hopefully, you were able to check her crop this morning, as Wyorp Rock, suggested.

Medicines can be administered to help her clear the contents, if the crop gets impacted. But you need to kill the yeast, which are causing her crop to be gaseous, which then, causes regurgitation or vomiting. When a chicken throws up continuously, this can be dangerous for the hen. She may become weakened, eyes closing, sleepy, watery diarrhea.

Here is what I wrote to another member.

• Nystatin is my choice to kill the yeast, along with (Lactulose to get things moving, if there is an impaction), but the Nystatin must be prescribed by a vet, here in California.
  
  
• Some keepers have had success with over the counter anti fungal medications like Monistat (Miconazole Nitrate), yes, the same stuff you'll find over the counter in the women's personal section of the drug store.
  
  
• Copper Sulfate is another remedy used by keepers. It is sold at farm/feed stores, I have never used it myself. It cannot be used in metal containers, and dosage must be accurate, as it can be toxic to chickens, if not used properly.
  
  
• If you prefer to use natural home remedies, I have a recipe for that too.

There are many remedies online that may or may not, be effective. But, the main thing is to get the contents moving down the digestive system.

You should keep massaging the crop to get the contents to go down. Do not feed her till the contents have cleared the crop and she poops. It may take a day, then tiny soft meals, and small amounts of wet mash, with fresh water available. Electrolytes in the water, and a dose of vitamins is also helpful. A course of Probiotics is also good.

She may also have a pendulous crop, which will make her more prone to this condition, again. Many keepers use a crop bra on the chicken, to support her crop, and keep it emptying properly. Each morning you must, check the crop to be sure it has emptied during the night. Once she is pooping normally, you'll know she is digesting properly.

This is a deadly condition, if left untreated.

Thanks. Her crop is not full. Can lice make her I'll like this?
